Replacing Tires Soon... 4 or 5? Recommendations?

I'm planning on replacing my Michelin Cross-Terrains in about 5-10k miles. If I replace my tires in 10k miles, I would have driven them for 80k miles in 4.5 years.

I live in Southern California, so it's always sunny and it barely rains. I'm looking for a tire that will last about as long. I'm looking for a tire that will also work great in the snow during ski season.

I have my eyes set on either the Michelin LTX M/S2 and the BF Goodrich All-Terrain A/T KO's. Any recommendations between the two? A different brand and model?

I put the Michelin LTX M/S2 on my wifes truck. In the crappy Cleveland Oh weather with some heavy snow I dig them. Very good traction. No noise. I drove around in the snow we got recently with the center locked and they did very well. Not aggressive like the BFG's and not as heavy. Looks wise I'd put the BFG's on my truck.
 
I can vouch for the Michelins LTX M/S2. I absolutely love them! Plenty of grip and very quiet, only con is that they are pricey. You get what you pay for I guess!
 
I'm a cross terrain guy, which I believe are now the ltx/ms 2's. So I'll probably be getting those again next year. I like em a lot.

However, if you're asking 4 or 5 tires, it depends. How old is the tire? Tires expire after about 6 years. Even if they have never touched the pavement. They can become extremely degraded despite looking brand new, and be dangerous to drive on. Check the date of manufacture on your tires, even when you get them new.. I had a dealer try and give me 2 year old tires as brand new. Nope.

I have the BFG AT KOs and I think they are great tires, I've heard of people getting 80-90K out of them. My BFG ATs did great in the snow in CO when I visited in January.

That being said, I don't believe those people who make 90K claims (I will believe it if mine last that long); most get 30-60K from what I've seen/heard. I'm not sure you will enjoy them if you really love the michelins.

They are a completely different tire; they are LT rated, making them stiffer and heavier than P rated michelins, but also able to haul heavier loads and more resistant puncture/cuts. They are also a true AT with a more aggressive (noisier & less smooth), quicker wearing tread pattern, but will also get better grip in most situations, and most think they look better.

To sum it up BFGs will be a little noisier, a little rougher riding, a little more puncture resistant, wear quicker, get great traction, and look great.

Tires stored correctly by reputable vendors and stored correctly by reputable retailers can be installed typically up to 3 years from date of manufacture without any ill effects. Most manufacturers warranty tires for 6 years, and the average driver typically wears a tire down to the point of replacement in about 3.

That being said, most retailers should be turning stock quicker than that, especially with the sizes we're talking about for 4runners.
 
Both are great tires but check out Firestone Destination A/T's. I had them on my 3rd gem runner and I'll probably get the same for my new 4th gen. Great mix of snow/rain/some off road performance with a decent tread pattern. Plus at a great price. just my 2 cents

I think my next tires are either

Michelin LTX2

or

BFG A/T KO

Probably LTX2 because I heard a lot of good stuff about them and BFG A/T KO has been out quite a long time now, I somewhat think they are older technology.

For sure...get all FIVE.

Ride noise and comfort is not really an issue to me, since I typically drive around by myself (work and school). I would love to get the BFG AT KOs, because of the looks and performance, but after reading some reviews on here, tirerack.com, and some local tire store websites, I'm a little skeptical about my decision. I'm definitely hoping that the BFG's last for at least 60k. $800 dollars every 30k miles is a lot for a student...

If I'm not mistaken, the prices between the two are about the same on tirerack.com, americastire.com and allentire.com (in comparison to each other on each website)

gaterose, how many miles do you have on your BFG's? krugnation, I'll definitely take a look at those online..

I'm going to check on my spare tire tomorrow... if it's a Dunlop, then it has been a little over 6 years.
 
I had the KO's on my '97 - had a bit over 40k on them when I sold it, and they had another 3-4k miles left in them. I will say that at half tread, they were NOT the same tire as new. I loved them at brand new and grew to not like them at halfway and older. They got very loud and did not do well at all in the snow or rain, they were marginal off road at that point. Keep in mind that halfway on the tread still means significant tread depth. I am hard on tires, so overall, I was happy to get 40k plus out of these tires (not the norm for me). I would probably buy them again, as long as I was putting them on a vehicle I didn't mind having a noisy AT tire on.

I have the LTX MS2's on my wife's '05 limited. LOVE THEM. They are dead quiet, ride amazingly nice, and the rain/snow traction is great...dare I say better than most any AT tire I've driven on. I assume it's because of the siping. We only have 4k miles on them so far, so it's hard to say what durability will be like, but they still look brand new so far. 70k tread warranty and they are known to easily last that long. Pricey, but worth it so far.
 
Since you have a v6 and not full-time 4wd like on the v8s you will be fine with 4 tires versus 5. I opted for 5 because of full-time 4wd and since I was going up to a 265/70/17 from a 265/65/17.
I went with a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers and love them thus far. Great in the ice, snow and mud plus they are quiet.
 
I know some people absolutely LOVE Michelons, but I've personally had bad luck with them twice, so when it comes time for new tires, I probably will pass on them .... but thats my luck sometimes LOL

Anyone here tried the General Grabber AT2'S or Yokohama Geolandar's ?
 
I just put a set of Michelin Latitudes on my 4Runner that were on special at Tire Rack for $530 for a set of 4. They are T-rated versus the H rated stock tires but I never drive over 90mph anyway. I don't off road so the Latitudes ride more like a pass car tire (smooth & quiet). They also did very well this Winter in some heavy NE Ohio blizzards. I would buy them again.

But if you have the V8 better get the H rated ones which are $120 more.
 
Also check out the Hankook Dynapro ATM and the Nitto Terra Grappler. They are two very popular tires that alot of guys on this site use. I am personally going to buy some Nittos in the next couple of weeks.

I second the Michelin Latitude Tours. I put them on a Grand Cherokee (that I miss dearly) and they completely transformed the vehicle. Went down the road like a dream! Best tires I ever bought. Highly recommend em. I am saving my lunch money now to put a set on my 3rd Gen 4Runner. I won't be going off-road much and am down in FL. Good luck with whatever you go with.

I'll probably do the same. I've had great luck purchasing tires at Costco. Had a couple flats and they replaced the tire for me in addition to free rotate/balance.

+1 on Destinations just got mine 5K ago. They have very good performance price ratio tires, looks good aggressive wise, already impressed how they handle in snow/rain/ice conditions. I got five but next time I am going to get only four.
I got a very good deal on them so was no brainer for me.

I'm a little biased...I say the BFG's but thats the look I was going for.

I've only had them for about 3500 miles on my 4R but had them on a Jeep and they were great.
