Report Assistant Service Mgr to dealership for joyride?

I might feel inclined to let them know you'll pass on their clearly satisfactory resolution to Toyota corporate so they know what a "great" job they did handling the situation. Also let them know you'll double check with law enforcement as well to make sure no crime was committed. Reassure them that you are sure they were diligent in their search for a fair and proper resolution to the the situation and wish them well in all future endeavors, all of this should be said very gracefully as well. Even if you don't pursue it any further, it would make me check a bit to think they might squirming a bit over it.

I already contacted Toyota Corporate about the issues regarding warranty work. wanted to find out more about why the warranty work was declined even though the dealership indiciated affected parts needed to be replaced asap. i'm just waiting for their response on Monday then I will be sending them new information and documentation regarding my past visit. that includes the video, a pdf scan of the invoice receipt, inspection report and screenshots of the GM/employee's correspondence. This is a lot of hassle for someone to go through but when someone messes with my 4Runner, all bets are off

Ugh. I'm awaiting dashboard replacement at the dealership!

Anonymous4Runner, THANK YOU for sharing your experience.

Can anyone recommend a dealership in the NoVA area? I'm wondering if I can transfer my dashboard to another dealership.

When I first bought my 1st '07 Sport, I met the seller at Koon's Toyota in Arlington to have the PPI done prior to discussing numbers. The shop seemed to be very professional other than check out which one of the staff members were clearly not in a good mood that day.

Koon's Toyota is most likely my next dealership here in NoVA otherwise I'm looking elsewhere. I definitely do not want to go Bill Page Toyota - I really dislike the service advisers there

Not correct, his testimony that it's off would suffice. Also, it's clearly at a dealer being driven by its employees.

We have one of those local news idiots that loves these types of stories, he'd run with it and NO business wants that. Def a possibility if you really want to stir the pot.

are you talking about Andy Fox lol

OP, first off very disappointing to hear Toyota treating their customers like that, its just not right.

Sorry to veer off course here, but what kind of dash cam do you use?

I have worked a three different dealerships over the years, two ford and one chevy....I was a mechanic at all three.
If someone was caught using an owners vehicle for personal use they would have been let go.
Once in a while I would drive an owners vehicle home and back to work to try and find a problem that would only show up during a cold start etc.
We always had the owners permission to do so.
One of the reasons I don't work on cars anymore is scummy employees pulling stunts like this.
I would never think of driving a customers car around to do my personal errands, we had 50 used cars on the lot if you wanted to go for a joyride.
My trust would be completely destroyed for this dealer and I would take my business elsewhere.

As I mentioned sending the GM an email last night, I slept on it and I'm going to send him one more email and give the GM a chance to truly make it up to me by doing warranty work for free out of their pockets since their mechanic did label affected parts as 'red requires immediate attention' and the joyride incident where they're trying to sweep it under it seems like

I need to figure out how I can make the dash camera run 24/7 in park mode - i suspect it involves hard wiring or getting some sort of a hub installed on the ground and connect the UBB to it

You might be able to use a 12v full time power mod, if the draw is low enough not to worry about. Although hard wiring would produce the same concern.

Is it mounted up near the map lights/sunroof controls? that might be an easy spot to try and wire. Up and across the headliner and down the Pillar would take more work, wire and time; but might give you more options for always hot wires

Yup! It's right underneath the mirror and I streamlined it underneath the trim toward the driver's side. I haven't had time to completely hide the wires so it's streamlined down the front window and i just hang the wire over steering wheel to the center console for power. Just need to learn how to hot wire since I'm an amateur

any chance this guys

related to owner? if you wanted to you could always contact toyota and supply them with the footage.

I'm the owner of this 4Runner that was driven by an employee during an unauthorized drive.

I just sent the GM one last email encouraging him to own up to his mistake (or rather the dealership's) and complete the warranty work for free of charge. i haven't threatened to contact corporate yet though.

depending on the GM's response, this will go 1 way or another..

-GM respectfully declines making up excuses to why he won't do warranty work for free out of their pockets
-GM accepts proposition and arranges for my truck to be serviced first thing on Monday and be ready for pick up at the end of the day same day or Tuesday morning at 7am.

If GM goes with response #1

I will respectfully thank his assistance in handling my complaint and appreciate his professionalism. I will then assure him Toyota Corporate will be receiving information about this incident and wish him all the best.

Then that will be my last time going to Priority.

I think JRM was referring too the Service Manager possibly being related to the owner of the dealership. (?)

Doubtful - possibly longtime friends with someone at the top for that particular location.

I'm really fed up with this GM though - about to end correspondence and take it to corporate to lodge a complaint then be done with it

That's on my way back to Virginia Beach where I have family there! I do have a longtime account with Charles Barker Toyota off Laskin road in Virginia Beach - I might check out other Toyota shops here in the area and use VB's (and maybe even yours!) as a last resort. I live in Fairfax so it's about an hour and half away to Richmond

If nothing pans out by tomorrow, I'll share the deets with you all and include a bonus video! :cheer2:

Me and my family, so 5 toyota's in total. Have always went here for service before I started doing my own work. Never had a bad experience. One time they did the recall update on my ECU, and I don't know what happened exactly but the tech forgot to charge up the battery while it updated and it killed my battery. Didn't find out till I went to start it the next morning though, they sent out a tech when I called and installed a brand new battery with warranty for free. Great customer service.

Update:

Haven't lodged the complaint with Corporate yet. Just got an email from the Parts / Service director wanting to see if this issue can be resolved since I thanked the GM for his handling of this situation and I'd be in touch with Toyota Corporate last night during the email regarding my experience

UPDATE!

They're going to do the work and will also detail my 4Runner free of charge. They will also supply me with a rental 5th gen 4Runner while the 4R is in the shop. I just need to let them know when I'd be dropping it off. Going to have tint done on Thursday then will be dropping it off probably same day or sometime on Friday.

At least this Parts/Service director knows how to resolve customer issues! Much better response compared to the GM's.

Great to hear!!
Are you going to let them do future work on your T4R?
Is the Service Director a different guy than the Service Manager who took it for the unauthorised ride?

Most likely - this guy seems more reasonable compared to the GM who just focused on shrugging me off with a PR statement. And no, the Parts/service director is not the same as the assistant service manager who drove my vehicle though. So it could be possible it was a rare incident at the dealership which is something I'm willing to accept. Chances are they added a note to my account saying 'CUSTOMER HAS DASH CAM, DO NOT JOYRIDE' for all i know haha. I'm willing to give 'em another chance because it's more closer to me compared to other dealerships in NOVA area. 13 mins and right off the exit compared to 20+ mins on i95 not including traffic

i did set the video private afterwards to show them i'm a reasonable customer who just wanted to be treated fairly rather than being shrugged off like some peasant. i believe in second chances
