Looking to sell my 4Runner before I head out to college and upgrade to something. I have an 05 V8 limited with a brand new paint job and I have the bypass equiped for the SAIS and I just was wondering how much of problem or value killer that really is? Nothing else wrong with it.

I had same issue with 2007 Limited V-8. It's a legal issue actually. If an installer is found to have bypass parts in their shop by Clean Air Act/Environmental Protection agents, then the fines can be huge. So far, car owners with the SAIS bypass kits haven't been targeted. I have done extensive research on this, including correspondence with lawyers within those government agencies about the bypass kits/devices. The Toyota fix is huge $$ and I suggest shopping around at dealers since their labor rates can vary.
As for resale or trade-in?
A dealer may overlook it on a trade-in but I was informed that my vehicle is running with a device that is against the law for which there can be heavy penalties.
I was also informed that a private sale is 'punishable by law', in writing. Skirting that law is common. Owners of these 4Runners got a raw deal from Toyota if they got the dreaded codes indicating failure of the original system which was originally only required in California.
So yeah, there are issues. Most people shrug it off or don't know about it or don't care. Just research 'defeat devices' online. I choose to have Toyota put in a replacement SAIS at great expense to replace my illegal bypass which had failed after one year. I wish I never put the damn thing on.
All I can say is that my truck runs like new. Fast again. No block off plate to choke it and hold it back.

The secondary air injection pump is $175 (edited error 175 to 275) plus shipping from partsouq dot com and is the OEM Toyota part. Yes the intake has to come off to get to it but it's not that hard to do yourself in 6 hours.
I'm tackling it this weekend. I had a knock sensor code so I'm doing knock sensors, the pump, PCV valve, starter, and valve covers. It's all the same labor "while you're in there".
In your case buy the part and install it.

You must of got real lucky to find the air pump for $175, I just checked partsouq.com and there are only 3 available and the cost is $282.91.

I did the job on my 4runner. It's not that hard. If you don't need the valves hen you are in good shape. You don't have to go with a toyota pump. A factory GM pump is exactly the same, all you have to do is change the plug and that is a few screws. Here is the link:

My car passed MA emissions recently with this mod. If it can pass in MA and CA, it can pass anywhere. This seems like a lot of paranoia for nothing.
Agree. Don't sell it to someone who works for the Air Resources Board and knows a lawyer :laugh: Or just pull the mod before you sell it...
I just took my 4runner V8 for CA smog last month, and it passed with the bypass. My pump is actually working, but I installed the bypass for piece of mind so I didn't get a break down if the pump failed while on a trip.
California only does OBD checks and no sniffer, I am sure my car would pass the sniffer, but it's clear that the Readiness Codes are all passed with the bypass
