resale values of 3rd gen 4runners

as someone aggressively looking to purchase
a 3rd gen 4runner..i am a bit miffed/confused :crazy:
..at the range of prices people are asking for their 4runners
that are for sale via craigslist..

..there seems to be a huge disparity in what
the owner seeks vs. the value kbb or edmunds
list the resale value as..

..am i wrong to look at these guidelines..?

seems when i mention these other prices
owners bark at me.. like actually car dealerships do..

for instance am looking at a:
99 sr5 w/ 145k..
guys seeks 5500..
yet kbb/edmunds has it more like 4500..

so i am curious what the 4runner community
values certain years and miles as their true value as..

97 w/140k sr5 4x4
98 w/140k sr5 4x4
99 w/140k sr5 4x4
00 w/140k sr5 4x4

4Runners around here fetch a premium too. I just got a '98 SR5 with 166000 and feel I got a good deal at $5000.

If you think T4r's are bad, look at 4-door Tacomas. You can't get one of those around here for less than $12000.

I picked up a 97 SR5 4x4 with 186,000 in July for $6000 from a small used dealer. I found the same thing you did, thinking I could go by KBB for an accurate price, NOPE. Not even close. It is true that the 3rd Gen T4R really holds value well and goes for more than what KBB and others say.

KBB/NADA can't add in the element of demand into their estimates. I think with Gen 3's they are more desirable than ever by SUV purists who compare what's available nowadays and what a Gen 3 4Runner offers. A reliable, capable workhorse that can be modified easily or kept stock and maintained for relatively little money. Whats left in todays SUVs that offer's a full frame, conventional 4wd system equipped (not AWD), and ground clearance? Tahoe/Yukon, Wrangler, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Xterra and maybe a couple others, that's it. I have been seriously offered $12,000 for my stock 02 and I declined 3x to this one guy. And no I shouldn't have "taken it and ran" because there's nothing that Id rather have, SUV wise, at this price point.

Around here clean examples are worth significantly more than KBB/NADA pricing. It's just the market demand.

My girl wanted a used 4unner and we were going to finance it, but even with banking connections we couldn't do it because the prices are higher than what the "experts" put them at based on age, miles, and condition. We ended up getting a better deal buying a new Corolla for her than we would have a used 4runner.

Flash forward a couple years and I was looking for a 3rd gen. I knew I'd have to pay cash to have any leverage on price. At least 4runners don't have as much resale mark up that 4x4 Tacomas have around here.

I was looking for a very specific truck: '99-'00 Limited 4x4 w/locker and the examples I found were $7k and up. Mileage was 130k-250k.

Yeah, KBB is just a rough guideline, most people understand that and price according to their market.

I can tell you this, however, be patient. You'd be surprised how often they come up at or under KBB. This is because unknowing families sell their old SUV instead of trading it in; first they lookup KBB, then they mark it down a few hundred for a quick sale. I see this a lot in the bay area. But they sell fast so you can't procrastinate when you get a lead.

They just don't understand the market -- not everyone scours the web for 4Runners or spends countless hours on 4Runner forums.

1999 Toyota 4Runner, great shape, 144k

he is willing to go to 5k..
yet needs timing belt replacement as it
has not been done at 90k..

curious what people feel is a fair offer..
or should i just suck it up and pay the 5k..

I think a lot of 4runner owners are dreamers, or they paid $30k for them new and are seriously out of touch with depreciation. When I was looking for mine, I saw some some for 14k. Lol, I got mine for $2300 but it was a pile, I wish I would've spent more and got something a little nicer to start with but whatevs.

..i mean i understand getting something
on the cheap doesn't mean good or long lasting
or allowing one to be comforted long term..

but in this case..he knows right off the bat
i will need to drop $400-800
getting the timing belt fixed..
..which maybe is his concession with the price..
but is it enough..considering kbb/edmund book value..

..or simply is $4700 fair offer or an insult.

Not an insult at all. I don't get this guy, he claims he loves it and wants the buyer to promise to take care of it, yet he can't even do required maintenance on it (timing belt, etc).

With not doing the TB I'd wonder what other maintenance he decided to forgo? Proceed with caution.

Be sure to take a really close look at it and get it inspected by a reputable shop if you don't really know how to do it to yourself.

BTW, if you plan on landing at 4700 you better start your offer lower than that for negotiation room.

If it turns out to be less than what you want or in bad shape, those 3hrs will pale in comparison to the time you're gonna spend in the garage with it. Agreed. KBB put my truck at 5500 but with demand, I was lucky to find one for 7000 here in utah. bought mine, a 2000 with 130K on the clock and managed to wing him down to 6500. The 3rd gens are desirable as the run forever, and 4wd. I love my rig, but I do wish I had been more patient. I got carried away when I bought mine. TRUST ME. If you look hard enough, search the classifieds, and troll the forums, you will find an amazing, immaculate runner for at or below kbb. If only I had known this before. TAKE YOUR TIME.

If it has one or two small kinks, that you can handle relatively inexpensively, that alright. But name the things "wrong" with it and knock him down on price.

A small dealership popped up near my house and my wife kept telling me what's in their lot while we were looking for another SUV to haul out three dogs around in. And the budget was 3000 dollars.

I drove the 4Runner in my Sig and a 2000 Grand Cherokee.

I chose the runner over the grand because the runner had front axil noise while turning sharp and slow. (It had the Quadra-drive and I wanted the jeep because of the Quadra-Drive to use it in snow for winter)

I chewed the dealer down to 2500 because of the rust, all the shocks were dead, tires wouldn't pass inspection, and non working sunroof. He was asking 3000 for it. The guy wouldn't go any lower than 2800 for the jeep. Even with the effed up front axil. So I got a 1996 SR5 with 254,000 miles for 2500.

I tested everything but the 4 wheel drive on the Toy. It didn't work. Was also told that it just had a new timing belt put on. Then I became a member here and started learning..........

Spent two off stretches lying under the thing with a sand blaster hitting the frame and the rear axil housing and painted everything with ZeroRust and after dry some flat black paint. Then sprayed a fogging oil in every hole in the frame. From fixing the rust I found it is or will rust inside wherever there was something welded to it.

Other things as well. But look over everything real good. Even the AC. If it wouldn't be for the engine and trans lasting as long as they do I wouldn't have bought it.

Was / is it worth the purchase? I hope. And I think so. I'm already collecting spare parts hoping to keep this a long time.

02 limited with 100K? car is grarge kept so underbody is in really good shape.. its got a dent on the rear bumper . has remote start (dealer installed).

also has an aftermarket 3rd row seat installed, was $2K made for 3rd gens, bolts in and is dot approved. (should i leave this in or try to sell seperately).


what should i try and get for this?

Just my guess: With 4x4 $7-9k clean of rust in your area. Without $4-6. :cowboy:
