resale values seem way down

Money is a little tight right now for me. I was thinking of selling my 06 SR5 v-8 4x4. I had port leather installed and a factory sunroof. With gas prices killing SUV sales it appears our 4 runners are getting hit hard also in the resale market. Mine is mint with 25k miles. I see 06 models going for 15-20k on craigslist and ebay. Does this sound right and what do you think I could get for mine. Forgot to mention it's white and has 17 wheels and spoiler and tow package.

For Southern California, your truck hit around $23K for trade in, $26K from dealer. So factor that in with gas prices, as well as the SUV demand right now, and I'm figuring about $19K-$20K for it.

It appears that as many Americans are looking for more fuel efficient vehicles, larger SUVs and Pickups are taking a BIG hit as far as new vehicle sales. Resale values of these vehicles also appear to be suffering as well.

Did anyone else take notice of the May 2008 4Runner sales?
A 40.3 % decline in sales for the month and a 37 % decline for the YTD would seem to indicate that the 4Runner is not immune to the search for better fuel economy.

One has to wonder if the current YTD sales of the 4Runner and their resale values are the new reality that Toyota and R4unner owners will have to deal with going forward. Time will tell.

Take it to carmax and have them give you a quote. They are usually a little higher than KBB "good" trade in price. But the used car market is getting flooded with SUV's right now. That is why prices are down. Along with the price of gas.

Its not strictly a SUV thing , even full size trucks , some crossovers , even small fuel efficient vehicle are not selling well and are taking a hit . Its fuel & the economy . Investments ect....

I personally think its people are hanging tight to their money right now not knowing what is going to happen , especially with an election year , this is pretty justifiable considering the times we are in .

Lets not forget the housing market , alot of people can't even afford to pay for their house.

Us 4R owners are not ahead of the game by anymeans but atleast on the better end of the spectrum owning a Toyota , Nissan , Honda , ect... than the others.

The above 3 are building plants in the U.S. while the others are closing.

As far as comparing a used 4R with a V8 vs a V6 is more of a mental thing for the buyer thinking they will get much better milage . Kinda of like the buyer who trades a vehicle in that they are upside down on already for a hybrid Prius thinking they are going to way ahead of the game because they are getting 35 mpg.

It makes me glad that back in late 03 I got a suv that I enjoy owning. Now I will hold on to this one a bit longer than expected. When my Ford was 5 years old it started falling apart - thus prompting me to start looking to replace it. The 04 4Runner is still going strong with only 45K on the clock - no need other than greed to look around. I see myself keeping it another few more years - it's been a great truck. Another factor that helps is that there is not another new rig out there that I would rather have.

I also have 4 motorcycles, a bicycle and only a 14 mile round trip commute (and no kids) - that helps a bit with gas. I added a crate to the back of the wifes little bike to make it better for little trips around town. I have noticed more little bike and scooters out and about?

Not to thread jack, but here is my .02

I just bought a brand new 4runner knowing the high amount of depreciation it is going to face. But, we plan to keep it 7-10 years, so depreciation means nothing to me at this point. Plus, it is not only the 4Runners, it is every brand that this is happening to. Moreover, the competition for sales of new cars is at an all time high in a tough market and the increasing incentive programs also make new cars more appealing and more affordable, which drives the used car values further down. I wouldn't be able to enjoy my car If I worried about depreciation... If I were you, I would ride out the tough times. Your truck sounds well taken care of with lo mileage...

We also just bought a new 4Runner and I love it. Fortunately, we will not be in a position where we have to use it as a commuter car, but will pretty much use it for trips only. Retiring at the end of the year and want to see the USA and Canada in a comfortable and reliable ride. Also wanted to get something that I'll have no problem doing some moderate off-roading out West and in Alaska.

I am well aware of the depreciation, but will keep it at least 10 years and hopefully longer. I am encouraged by how many 3rd generations I see on the road that look to be in teriffic shape, and have always maintained our cars well.

I, like you, love seeing the 3rd gen and cladded 4th gens looking so good. :bigok: I really think we can get 10 years and well over 140k on these 4th gen T4Rs.

With 110K and Grey cladding...I will keep it forever because I sure won't be able to sell it.
