Rescue Runner Build

This is Rescue Runner, a 2003 4th gen. I found him sitting behind a barn on a cold November day. I spoke with his owner and he said Rescue had been sitting back there for about two years. We agreed on a price ($4K 150k miles) and was able to adopt him a couple days later.

Since he had been sitting for so long he had a empty battery and empty belly. I checked all his fluids which looked new and I dropped in the new battery. A turn of the key and the 2UZ woke up after his long slumber. A fresh tank of premium and I took Rescue home.

He received a detailed bath, wax and buff as well as clean oils throughout. On Valentines he got a Pioneer 4100nex to compliment the JBL system. A couple weeks later my wife surprised me and had his windows tinted and he was liking all the attention.

I had a limited budget for suspension, wheels and tires. So I opted to spend it all on suspension and ordered ICON extended RR CDC front coilovers with ICON uniball uppers. ICON 2.0 shocks in the rear with ICON 2.0” coils. Wheelers super bumps front and rear and a 1” toytec body lift. Since he was growing up he had to widen out so I added 1.25” spacers to the stock wheels and picked up some JK take of BFG 255/75/17 tires to get me him by a while till I can afford 33’s-34’s and wheels.

After waiting eight long weeks for the ICON goodies to get here Rescue is looking all grown up.

I have some 4x innovations sliders in my garage waiting to be warmed up too.

2.5” ICON RR w/CDCV coilovers
ICON Uniball Upper control arms
Wheelers super bumps

2.0” ICON VS. shocks
2.0” ICON Springs

Wheels and Tires-
Stock wheels
1.25” wheel spacers
255/75r17 BFG

Armor-
4xInnovations DOM sliders w/kickout

I originally had $3k ish set aside for lift wheels and tires. But after a ton of research 2” vs. 2.5, monotube vs. twintube, Digressive vs. progressive, Remote res. vs. non, Adjustable valving vs. non. I did a TON of research before going with the ICONs and even after pulling the trigger on them I second guessed if I really wanted a digressively valved shock but I’m glad I stayed with them. I find myself searching for rough roads and railroad tracks[emoji23].

The BFG’s were JK take offs I picked up for $200. It definitely needs the 285/70’s or 285/75’s

Here’s some interior pics of Rescue. He’s had some TLC.

I forgot to mention when cleaning out the jockey box I found all maintenance records for the past 150k and timing belt/water pump was done at 98k. [emoji106][emoji106]

Are those seat covers or original Toyota leather? It looks good regardless! And score on the maintenance logs! Cool to see some basic mods done already too, like USB charging, head unit, floor mats, etc.

I feel you. I had $3000 set aside for wheels and suspension after purchase price, too, but after dropping in the ICON and a new set of 285/70 BFG KO2s (sold the old tires for $300 to offset the BFGs a *tiny* bit), I'm now stuck trying to scramble for some new rims with better offset so I'm not rubbing my stock UCAs at full articulation. Oh well-- good thing I totally love the ICON setup.

Very sweet find and nice build, UT4RNR. Look forward to seeing more!

Hey thanks! Yeah the seats and door panels were re covered a couple years ago. I think there’s a pamphlet in the jockey box with the brand if you’d like me to check it out?

Your budget suspension build is probably twice as much as most budget builds found on the site here. Real nice barn find though. I wouldn't have minded finding me one of those, but v8 4th gens are pretty hard to come by as it is already. I ran front Icons on my 3rd gen and was debating if I should go with the 2.5 fronts / resi rears for my 4th. Still researching that though, I feel that between the tuner world and off road world, coilovers all just feel firm and controlled to me and not really super comfortable. Excuse my long winded talk though.

Looking pretty clean in that last picture though, did you polish him up for the pics?

I never said this was a budget build just that I blew my budget on the suspension...

I keep things clean but the carpets haven’t been shampooed or anything since he was rescued...

I find the suspension to be about as plush as it gets. Feels extremely planted yet soaks up speed bumps and poor roads like a high end cross over vehicle is the only way I can explain it. Definitely worth every penny.[emoji106][emoji106]

Good to know. I'm not going full reservoir setup though just the 2.5 coilover in front and 2.0 resis in the rear. Maybe one day after the laundry list of stuff is done for the truck I'll upgrade to front resi with adjusters.
 
The one downside to Rescue was his wheels from sitting. The clear coat pealed some and there was some pitting so I finally got around to plastidipping my wheels. They’ll have to do for now till I can get either SCS, Methods or TRD’s which will be my next big purchase.

You've definitely jumped on the ball! It seems like you got an amazing deal too, happy to see you're getting your full enjoyment out of the runner! I've been planning on the Icon set up, it's farther down my list considering I've already got an OME lift, but your pics are still selling it all the more haha

Look forward to seeing the progress!
