Whats the deal with removing the resonator on the T-4's? Any performance gain? What about fumes coming in cab? I know this has been tossed around. Any thoughts out there? Good idea, or bad idea?

I was shocked at the noise difference. I was running the Dynomax VT with resonator still in place and it was close to factory sound. Once I cut the resonator off, BOOM it opened it up and it sounds awesome now.
The resonator has absolutely nothing to do with fumes or smell. Toyotas are notorious for stinking like rotten eggs due to the type of converters they use and the number of converters they use. Nothing you can do about that. I hate being behind other Toyotas on the highway. Yuck.

How loud was it? Im still running stock exhaust? I do not want it too loud? Is the sound clean, or does it sound like my very first truck as a kid when I cut the mufflers off and thought i had a race car that sounded like crap?

I cut my resonator off and just put a tip there instead, keeping my stock muffler. I noticed almost zero change in sound. Perhaps just barely louder, or lower but not extreme by any means.

For me it was to re-route the exhaust to the side. I had an incident with melting a couple beach chairs while they were on my hitch carrier going down the interstate. I've never really had an issue with the rotten egg smell that many people have. No noticeable sound difference for mine.

I had the muffler swapped out for a Magnaflow, dumped the reso and had the exhaust routed out behind the rear tire.
Obviously the muffler changed the sound, but the biggest change is no more smelly exhaust. If I get on it with the back window I can get a hint of the rotten eggs, but that's it.
As for performance, better throttle response, for sure.
But I also modded my airbox too.

I'm running the no resonator with stock muffler as well, dumped behind the passenger tire. I didn't notice a difference in sound compared to stock, but I'm sure there was a small one. Fumes coming in through the back window were reduced as well. If there was a change in performance it wasn't noticeable.

I just cut my resonator off after it dumps over the axle, meant to get a tip but never did get to it. The noise is not too much different, idle has a bit of a burble to it that often makes me think it has a slight misfire, sort of that loping idle you hear on old V8's. On hard acceleration you get a nice throaty V8 roar, but nothing super loud; but enough to make me smile at times.
Basically the resonator smooths out the exhaust note so its much more flat sounding and damnpens the noise a bit as well. I found removing mine got rid of the exhuast smell with the windows down, only really notice it on start-up and then goes away after a couple minutes of driving with the window down.

To make room for my CBI rear bumper I cut off my resonator and rerouted the exhaust to the side behind the the rear tire. I have an otherwise stock exhaust with a V6 and noticed no additional sound. Additionally, there was no performance benefit--just the tip was less likely to get squashed going over obstacles.

Only reason I cut mine off was to route the exhaust out the side. You could also make the argument that the stock exhaust running straight back is likely to hit obstacles when going vertical. Either way, cutting it off offers more tangible gains in clearance and routing options and to my ear does nothing to make the truck sound different.

Responding to 5 year old posts further up, but if your exhaust smells like rotten eggs, it's because your catalytic converter(s) are bad. That's not a 'Toyota' thing, that's a 'broken part' thing.

Do you have a video? Considering installing a side exhaust on my V8 but know I need to remove the resonator to do so.

Actually not quite true. Especially the 4th gens were known for the rotten egg smell from new. There was a TSB issued that replaced the cats with diffreent cats.
"There is a known concern for this situation. The TSB# EG005-06 and
TSB# EG004-06 are Toyota bulletin numbers that explain your condition and lists the parts necessary to correct it.
There are two different bulletins depending on the engine size.The correction is to replace the catalytic converters with units designed to remove the sulfur smell. Even though you have 75K miles on the vehicle,the catalysts maybe covered under an extended emission warranty. If they are,they should be replaced at no charge to you.
Now if they are not covered and you decide to replace them,make sure they use the following updated part numbers. If you have a 2UZ-FE engine,the updated catalyst is #17410-50490 and 17450-50131. If you have a 1GR-FE engine,the updated catalyst is #17410-31600 and 17450-31060. These are the numbers for the units that remove the sulfur smell."

the previous owner of my '06 must have backed into something with the tail pipe because the tip was curled back and the pipe was bent. it rattled like fuxking crazy and just rested on the frame. i took it to a muffler shop and for $60 had it cut off at the muffler and a new pipe welded on, dumping it out behind the rear passenger wheel. like a tacoma. i don't think i've ever paid attention to the sound it made, other than it stopped rattling.

Unfortunately I do not. I only ran this setup for about 4 months before building a custom mandrel bent 2.5" cat back, using a Flowmaster delta 50 muffler and no resonator.

I rolled the back window down on my 4Runner when I was test driving it before purchase. It had a whopping 7 miles on the odo and I smelled the rotten egg sulfur smell.
I cut the resonator off and turned the exhaust 90° to exit behind the tire. It was bent after some dummy hit me in a parking lot and I’d scraped it on rocks wheeling. No noticeable sound difference at all. At freeway speeds my tires and roof rack/light bar drown out any possible droning from the exhaust.
