Resonator on cat back?

I just bought a mangnaflow cat back exhaust, and there is simply too much drone.. I was wondering if anyone has tried tacking their cat back to a muffler shop and had a resonator installed into the system? And if so, what it did to the exhaust note? Thanks!

I can't answer your question. I can offer my 2 cents. If the drone bothers you that much, I would put the stock system back in and sell the aftermarket system or if at all possible, return/exchange it? Muffler only? The last thing I'd want to see is you breaking your back on this project and not being happy with the end results.

It's a definite possibility. I'm really just sleeping on it right now. I have a friend who owns a muffler shop, so I can get a discount on a mangnaflow 14" resonator, and he will install it for free. I thinly that's going to be my first course of action. If it isn't enough, back to stock for me

You can either use a resonator or install a dynomax turbo muffler or add a 2nd muffler. Many xrunners go this route, but their running much more than a catback. Aeroturbine and Magnaflow make good resonators.

I CAN answer your question. I installed a Gibson and it droned like an SOB despite what I've read on here about others who've installed the same cat-back kit. Maybe there are different interpretations of what drone is but the Gibson transformed my smooth and quiet SUV to a flatulent moaner. It was like someone playing a french horn/tuba underneath the truck. I had a performance muffler shop weld in a Magnaflow resonator where the stock one was and didn't do anything AND the 2.5" pipe/tip I asked them to put on was a hair SMALLER than the stock black pipe -- the stock tail pipe is pretty big as it is. It's really the large stock muffler that dampens the sound. I recall test driving a bunch of FJ Cruisers before buying the 4Runner and they were much more boomier and dronier (if that's a word). I recently took a peek under a stock FJ and it dosen't have a resonator but more importantly, the muffler's much smaller. That likely has something to do with it. Also, the Gibson over-axle pipe banged the crossmember over large bumps where the stock pipe had a relief.

When I have some time, I'd like to rework the entire stock exhaust to put in smooth bends and ovals to replace the pinches and crimps to improve flow but to keep the sound stock.
