Hey Guys,
So here's a bit of a quandary that i've been tossing around for a few days...
Before I say anything else, you should know I am going to have a transmission service done on my new-used '02 runner next week. She has 101,xxx mi. and has not had transmission issues that either the Toyota dealership or my mechanic have been able to sniff out in their (albeit likely very short) test drives. They do have an inkling that the fluids have not been touched, which is why I'm having the service done asap. 90k mi service was just done along with cooling system flush, new thermostat, and new spark plugs...meant to have this all bundled with tranny, but life happened.
So here's the evidence:
When driving on the highway at speeds between 55 and 70 mph it feels like the throttle is "soft". Meaning I can depress a matter of inches and not feel any significant reaction. Also, I have noticed that I can sometimes hear her purr a little harder with more gas in this scenario, but the tachometer sits steady, accompanied by a very gradual acceleration. Shouldn't there be a direct correlation between more gas and more rpm (newb alert)?
So what do you suspect? I've read some posts that suggest a tranny service may help response issues. I've also read posts about the throttle chord (and found a less-than-taught chord on my truck), but they also mentioned this may not be applicable to the '02 model with the "drive by wire IIRC" system (which I know zilch about).
In general shifting is smooth and acceleration seems normal. If I wanna juice it, there's no problem kicking up into the higher rpm range and gettin' on it. With moderate acceleration, I've noticed a drop of roughly 1,000-1,500 rpm at the point of the shift. Don't know if that helps at all, or if that's normal, but it was something I noticed.
