Retrofit Projects

Hey everyone,

I've been looking at the threads on the retrofit projectors and I just wanted to know how labor intensive, what kind of projectors you're using, problems anyone has had, what they could of done differently, and how much they like them. I have 05 4th gen.

Thanks for reading my post and I'm looking forward to the responses.

I had a retrofitter do mine. I didn't (don't) have the time to do all that work. I choose to get (Acura) TL projectors. They are huge, but so are our 4th gen headlights (plenty of room). About 4 years later, I still love them. Beam pattern is very wide. My second choice were the (Lexus) LS460 projectors. Those were (still are) about twice as much as the TLs. Not worth it IMO. With either projector, your choice of shroud is limited. But if you are going for a look rather than function, then: uurrghhh.

If I were to do it again, I would choose the TL-R (same projector, but with a more robust high/low beam solenoid). If $$ were no issue, I'd get the LS projectors.

Problems I had were the TL (stock) solenoids. They are polarity sensitive (reverse them just once and they are fried). I initially had problems with my ballasts. I choose to get Densos, but wasn't aware they are not waterproof. After they failed, I replaced them with other Densos, but potted them. ~1 year later, no problems!

Good luck.

Retrofit Headlights

I've posted about this a few months back. I'm interested in retrofitting my current headlights (03-05 model). I've looked online and I came across these items. If you guys can tell me if there is anything else I should have to add please let me know. I plan on doing this mod in the near future.

You may have already seen my retrofit thread, but I have some pretty detailed posts about the process in there. It was/is my favorite mod to my 4Runner... Always get compliments on them, and they really do provide better visibility.

I've looked at your retrofit threat multiple times and it's probably my favorite. Do you think that kit in the picture I uploaded would work fine? I know it's not the Morimoto Mini kit and everything.

Yeah, the kit you posted looks like it would mount up fine. It's the same size and everything, probably similar to the Morimoto in terms of design. I'd be interested to see how similar the results are if you choose to go that route.

I most likely will go towards this route. I'll hopefully start this mod at some point in the summer. Should be quite interesting to build.

Trs also has a continual group buy price over on tacomaworld, may be able to jump on that. I get all my stuff used either on hidplanet or directly from trs.

Look out for my tuned rx330 retro here soon!!

So bringing this back alive. Got some parts for the project. My question is when painting the shroud did y'all leave the chrome or strip it and then painted it? And if so what did you do use to get rid of the chrome?

I didn't strip mine; I used Krylon Fusion for Plastic spray paint over the chrome. I haven't had any major issues with chipping or flaking (one small rub spot where the jewelry wire for mounting my halos sits). I can imagine a product like Citristrip would remove the chrome just fine if you chose to go that route.

One suggestion I can make (and I should update my thread to reflect this): Stay away from the Morimoto halos. Like others have noted, the SMDs in the rings fail one by one and leave the halos looking spotty. I plan on swapping mine out for something of higher quality soon.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion. I don't plan on doing the halos, but I plan on doing the demon eyes. I got my projectors and shrouds from TRS. Drove 30 mins and picked them up sense they're based in ATL.

Really depends on what paint you use, but your best bet is to at least scuff the chrome with sand paper
