Retrofit Tire Carrier Maintenance

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone can chime in.
I have a retrofitted Hilux Tire Carrier on my 99 4Runner. I have been noticing that the tire carrier is starting to get harder to open and close.
Is there a type of grease or lube i can put on the hinges to stop it from getting stuck?

I was thinking of putting WD-40 on the hinges but winter is coming up and im looking to use more durable grease on it. There are no zerk fittings on it or anything to keep it lubricated.

You will want to use a lubricant. Please do not use WD-40 as it is not a good lubricant and will attract dirt and dust.

I'm sure there are many here who have good suggestions.
Silicon spray will work but dry out quickly. I dont know if you can use a penetrating oil like PB blaster as a lubricant.

I was thinking of using white lithium grease, but should i just spray at the joints and swing it open and close till it starts getting easier to swing? I heard the plastic caps are removable i was thinking of removing it and spray a $hit load in there. I didnt do this retrofit so im not sure if it is removable LOL

Thanks for the replies guys, Ill just grease the shit out of it over the month with white lithuim grease, and hopefully holds up in winter

swing out the carrier and look at the back of each hinge. you'll see a small hole and that is where you grease the pins. no need to remove the plastic covers.

EDIT: alternatively, you can put several drop drops of thin oil at the top of each hinge and swing the carrier in-out repeatedly until the hinges become lubricated.
btw, the plastic covers are removable but become brittle after some years so be careful when removing them.

The carrier is made up of two arms, upper and lower. If you swing out the carrier and follow both arms towards the brackets, you will see that the arms each end in a short vertical cylinder, which is the hinge. the hole is right at the center of each hinge.

Oh that is awesome! Ill just use the white lithuim grease in there for the next couple weeks

"Heavily, and not that often" is the rule with grease....

Or is it the other way around....?

Wax based motorcycle chain lube, make sure it dries and spray a second coat. No sling........& call crowcifier6 in the morning.:jump:
