Reverse gone/transmission quote

I was out on some trails and unfortunately lost reverse in the process of doing it. Took it to AMMCO to get it checked out was told $4000 for a new transmission with a 3 yr/100k mileage warranty.
Does that seem like an accurate price for a brand new transmission?

I would put in a low mileage used transmission in there before letting amco touch the transmission.

Used one should be no more than 2000 with labor.

That quote is for a rebuilt transmission, AMMCO does not sell factory NEW transmissions. Call your local Toyota Dealership for a quote from them. I believe they also sell factory remanufactured transmissions, and maybe brand new units.

I agree.

In fact I wouldn't let Ammco touch the vehicle. They're probably one of the worst shops I've ever dealt with. They couldn't even rebuild a GM turbo 350 correct, which is probably the most common auto trans out there. There's no way they could properly rebuild 5 speed Toyota trans.

Look for a used transmission or go with either a rebuilt or new from Toyota.

I would stay away from AMMCO too.
Year before last, Mom took her 470 in because of some dash lights and they wanted to rebuild the trans...all it needed was a new gas cap!
Which I figured out reading on T4R.org...thanks gang.

My dealership quoted $3000 for a factory remanufactured (as close to new as it gets) transmission plus $1000 labor with a 1 year warranty. I'd have a dealer do it, I've heard a lot of problems with ammco and as a cop I've had to respond to irate customers at my local ammco.

On a trail.
Started to get too steep, so tried to reverse up the hill.
Traction control kept kicking in, then eventually stopped and rpms just keep going up

Ended up taking it to a local transmission place that I was recommended. It's gonna be completely rebuilt.

Wow! I wouldn't have seen that coming. I would have expected the reverse gear to be just as strong as 1st gear forward, since it's about the same ratio. Were you in 4Lo or 4 Hi?

i was in 4hi, nothing else special engaged, just normal everyday driving settings (v8 with all time 4wd)

While I still wouldn't have expected the reverse gear to let go under your conditions, it is worth noting that 4Hi puts more stress on the tranny than 4Lo, by the ratio of the transfer case (2.57:1)

If the traction control kept kicking in while trying to back up, you probably should have locked the center diff so the traction control would have been disabled.
