Just purchased a 1990 automatic 4runner. Tried to pull it out of the driveway yesterday and reverse didn't work. It felt like it engaged when I put it into gear but nothing happened when I stepped on the gas. All other gears work fine. I put it into 4L and it pulled right out. Tried it several more times throughout the day and it was hit or miss if it would work fine, kind of work (would reverse but at it's own slow speed regardless of the amount of gas given) or would have to be put in 4wd in order to make anything happen. I bought a trans flush kit to try but thought maybe I could find an answer here first. I searched but didn't see much. Anyone have a similar issue?
