RevTek or OME

OME or RevTek

I did some searching and researching and I came down to these 2 options. I wanted to see what the opinion on this board is between the 2.

This is the RevTek kit I am finding around here
http://www.revtek.com/product_sel.asp?makeid=4&modelid=10

I plan to do some Off-roading but nothing like deep rutted trails or mud. Bigger tires and wheels will be added later but nothing to drastic. My thinking is that the RevTek will be enough for what I want to do and any changes in the ride comfort would be minimal?

It is about a $300 difference w/o labor between the 2 applications.

Thanks

over time the spacer setup (revtek) will give you a harsher ride. the OME's are a direct stock replacement so the ride will not change.

I'd say it's worth the extra 300 for the plush ride.

good luck

I have Cornfed right now, but I'm waiting for OME delivery. I decided to do the upgrade because its way better for serious off-road. My 2c: if you can afford extra $300 - do it. Especially you have SR5, means no XREAS, nothing to loose.

I had a lot of trouble deciding what to do with my 4runner but most simply here's how I'd put it:

What would you rather have a hottie with long legs !?!?! or some chick with short legs and high heals?

;):

Ryan looks like you did the install yourself? How was it and where did you order it from? and your 4runner looks really good

Well, it may look like I did the installation myself but I didn't. I was just there lending a hand. My buddy has a mini shop in his driveway and runs a company called g-machines so they were more than qualified to install the lift without my help.

They'd never done a toyota before, so it was a learning experience.

I ordered the lift from slee off-road which they prompltly shipped for 700-750 (they'll assemble the front coil-overs for an additionaly fee).

The installation wasn't that bad, just make sure you have the correct sized strut compressors. And when you disconnect the X-Reas use the valve near the frame, not the shock. (if you do it correct you won't lose a drip of oil). There is more info about the OME installation on the toyota120 forum.

It rides great, if you do a search I posted some pics of my first time on a trail at Rowher near Newhall, CA.

OME.

If you are installing yourself, I would try having the front struts/spring shipped assembled with new top plates. Compressing 2 stock struts, removing the top plates, then compressing two OME struts is not fun. Otherwise the install is easy.

Why? May be it's the funniest part of the installation. :D I'm just joking... Yes, it's much easier to install it assembled, but with a help and right tool you can assemble front struts yourself. I've done it twice with my 4Runner and it wasn't that difficult.

I have Snap-On brand spring compressors. They twisted and torqued with the stock springs. You almost have to laugh so you don't think about what will happen if something gives. :)

I also kept the X-REAS attached, making it more difficult.

The OME are a lot more spring to compress than stock.

Having everything assembled makes going back to stock much eaiser, if the need ever arises.

Is the OME just a longer spring instead of a spacer lift ? Can you keep the XREAS vwith the OME.

OME is complete replacement of the springs and shocks.
Yes, theoretically you can swap only springs, but practically I'd not recommend to do it. If rear might work fine, OME spring will be approximately the size of stock + spacer; front probably will have some issues. See, many spacers lifts on front use 2 spacers: upper and lower. Upper lowering the strut and lower pre-load the spring. This means that you actually doing of effect longer spring with lower spacer. OME will change this dramatically, because it's just a spring, no upper spacer. You'll end with way overextended front shock-strut with a minimum of shock travel (may be 1/2"). Taking in consideration that OME springs have different rate to stock springs this will make the setup like that even worse. You'll end up with very hard drive with minimum or even without down-travel. OME shocks are specially designed to work with their springs and I do hardly recommend if changing to OME, go with full setup.
