I am not for or against what they are doing. Just keep in mind they are not focusing on your age, sex, or race: it's about how much music you "share" not download. If what you share is from downloads or rips you did from cd's doesn't matter. It's the issue that you are sharing music that you do not have permission to do. If you shared 1,100 or more songs of your own music: meaning you wrote it and recorded it, then there is no laws broken there.

It's the fire they use to ignite huge flames that people feel within themselves when they think of the actions of the RIAA. Because of that, they tend to ignore the reason for it.
My stand on this is that MP3's or any other type of digital music is here to stay. Face it, the day of going to the store and buying your CD is over. Instead of fighting this, embrace it as some companies already have.

What burns me up is that most CD's suck now. ~$15 for a CD with 1-2 good songs is the norm. Back in my day I remember when they were $9.99 and that was the avg price. I liked the idea of composing your own CD. The only problem with that is the quality is never quite the same on an MP3 as the original CD. I better be quiet now, I am beginning to sound like Grumpy Old Man....I am probably just getting old now.....

Actually Toyogirl that is a misunderstanding that I had and you made and so many others. Here is how it goes: they do not have a problem with you recording or copying music that you bought! Their problem is copying the music then using a tool (the computer & internet) to mass distribute to hundreds, thousands, and even millions of people across the globe.
Back in the day Metallica was more than willing for people to record their creations, but they new that recording via tape would make it very difficult for you to mass distribute it. So now with the internet and digital music, you can rip, and send a file within minutes. So with these file sharing programs and having others with the same program on, a guy or girl that you do not know in Japan can copy your song just like that.
Also, I love the new format for now what used to take me a few hours to make a mix tape, now only takes me a few minutes. I rip the CD's, pick the songs, and make my mix CD. Guess what, that is "legal" because I own the music, I am copying it for my own use and ears, and I am not distributing to anyone else. Which basically means if you had an mp3 of every song of the world on your computer, and it was all from rips you did of your cd's then there is nothing illegal about that. But if you had a filing sharing program for all those songs to be copied, then you by law are in the wrong.

I do understand what you are saying about the mass distribution, but when you copy something off of the radio you are still copying something you never bought. It is much quicker and easier now to make a mix CD of songs you never bought, but I still know plenty of people who buy CDs, I wonder how much it actually effects CD sales from now or before online burning? Not to mention the fact that the big name artists are the ones bitching, like they really need the extra money I think not, and the smaller bands aren't griping because they get exposure. It's all about greed if you ask me. They still make plenty of money on concerts and promotions and commercials, etc...

Making a lot of money is all based on assumption unless you really have seen multiple musicians pay checks. I think we as the people make too many assumptions. Just because we see someone on MTV Cribs doesn't mean anything: they could have spent all their money on their "crib" and now be broke for all we know.
