**Rickashay's OME vs. TRD Tundra/LC Review**

Thanks for putting this thread together! It really helped me put my lift in. I wound up doing the tundra billies out front on the second perch with some stiff OME springs, and then tacoma billies in back with the LC 7 wraps. It has about half to three quarter inches of rake but the road manners are pretty darn good. I'm sure this has already been mentioned somewhere on here, but here's what I did wrong:

Install the diff drop the same day! I forgot to do this and drove it for a week...I added a new cv boot and a ton of time to my lift.

Replace the bolts on the rear lower shock mounts. Mine snapped because the old bolts couldn't handle the additional pressure from the taller shocks and springs. After re-threading the holes and installing grade 8 hardware I seem to be good to go.

Since you're already under there I recommend doing your bushings. It didn't add any real time or cost, but it really helped with the road manners.

I saw a few questions as I scanned the last few pages that I don't think got answered.

1. Wheeler's Offroad sells the rear Tundra Bilstein 5100s shocks with the bushings already swapped. I just got mine installed and they were plug and play.

2. I just installed my 1999 tall springs on front Tundra 5100s on the 4th notch and gained about an inch. I also installed OME 906 springs in the rear and it is sitting almost perfectly level unloaded. I'm going to give it a little time, but may go to the 890s eventually to get a little rake. Coming from stock worn out 1999 suspension, I'm happy with the ride...road manners are good and am happy with dirt road/washboard driving.

hoathbill - What are the part numbers of the front coils & shocks that you used? New or used?

I haven't heard of anyone else with a similar issue. I am considering the same lift and would be interested to hear others chime in. You might want to start a new thread to ask the question.

I did the Tundra TRD coils and tundra 5100's up front and OME 906's with 5100's in the back, ala' "Speedy's Garage" on youtube. It seems to be a popular set up and I haven't been able to find anyone who isn't happy with it.

However, I get slight body roll and a slightly "loose" side to side ride, highway handling is worse than my old stock suspension. Off road however is great, no complaints. As a daily driver highway handling is important to me and it bugs me.

Steering rack is brand new and OEM, sway bar bushings are brand new front and back and end links are good. Got an alignment at a good shop post lift/steering rack. Took truck to a good performance shop with lots of off road lift experience and they said install looks good and they think that the ride is due to the heavy spring rating for a Tundra on my lighter 4runner. I don't run an after market front bumper or winch, like many others with this same set up.

With so many others describing a "better than stock" ride. I'm stumped and out of ideas and I'm open to any ideas the community has. I don't feel a 2" lift should give up that much handling. I'm considering a OME 881 set up for the front with either OME nitro charger sport shocks, or Bili 5100's to match the rears to get better handling. Any advice?

I'm in the process of installing tundra coils/906 with tundra 5100's all around. So far I only have the rear done.

My experience.... I have waay more body roll than before (Bilstein HDs on stock coils in rear). The HD's used to be jarring with less body roll, with 5100's it's plush with a lot of body roll. I immediately looked into addco sway bars. They were pretty expensive and now I'm just waiting to install. I believe speedy has addco swaybars too. I'm also working on extended links.

I'll update when I get everything together.

Anyone know where I can find the .75" bushings for the rear eyelets? I have called and talked to DSMS and they said that they don't have anything for that at all. Im currently just waiting on my front billies to not be back ordered and get here at the beginning of next month and it seems like no one has the right bushings. Any help as to where to get this or part number would be greatly appreciated!!

I got these

Daystar KU08007BK Black 3/4" I.D. Standard Hourglass Shock Eye Bushing

Amazon.com: Daystar KU08007BK Black 3/4" I.D. Standard Hourglass Shock Eye Bushing - Pair: Automotive

So far so good.

And you put them on the 1st gen tundra 5100s in the rear? The size and everything worked for you? I guess the question I have is that the 5100s I got have the metal sleeve going through the middle of the eyelet... is that needed? Or no, they will be fine without it? And was it bigger at all with the width or anything? Did any of the bushing stick out length wise? Or perfect fit no trimming?

In your opinion, if you were to run the 881's with the bilstein struts. Would it be worth it or would it only be best with TRD Tundra coils. I'm debating throwing out my 881/90004 combo for all same reasons. And I want what your saying but debating if new coils are needed that much or just new shocks.

Rear:
LC 8 wrap coils with 4Runner rubber internal bumpstop (ads ~3/8" lift and does not need to be used if you want to keep it lower in the rear)
Bilstein 5100 Tundra shocks with new .75" bushings for the bottom (they came with .5") - Rear Shock Part #: BE5-A014-H7

Hey man,

After mulling around on this forum for months, I finally started buying pieces to put together a lift similar to yours. I'm going with LC8 wraps and Bilstein 5100 Tundra shocks, but I'm having difficulty sourcing the .75" bushings. I bought most of the parts from Toytec, but they have the Tundra shock listed as part #C476. Did I get the right shock? Thanks for your input!

This may have been answered but I couldn't find it. And I am new to lifting. Are the 5100's for the tundra different than 5100's for the 4Runner? I followed the initial link for the shocks and there is a huge disclaimer saying they will not fit 4Runner, while other sites list 5100's for 4Runner. Is there a difference in how they hook up?

Also the shocks on front, unknown what brand but fairly new already on my 4Runner fit with a 3" spacer lift, and stock coils. Could I just swap out the coils for tundras or do you have to do shocks that are compatable?

Thanks guys

I'm assuming that if you get the 5100 rears from Sonoran Steel kit the bushings will be fine for the 4Runner? Right?

Setup

I know this is an OLD thread, but I am hoping that the OP or other followers are subscribed and will actually see this.

I am installing the following this weekend, after reading over this thread numerous times:

Front: Tundra springs, Bilstein 5100 adjustables
Rear: LC 8 wrap coils (19ish"), Bilstein 5100

I have been worried the whole time that I have been assembling the parts that

1. the rake would be too extreme for my liking (I just never could find 7 wrap LC coils)

2. To level the truck out I would have to go to the 3rd perch on the front shocks, resulting in a rough ride, which is what I am trying to avoid as this is my daily driver.

After searching and reading numerous posts, I am only left with two questions:

1. Has anyone experience any long term issues with removing the stock 4Runner rubber cones when replacing the coils? I know lots of guys remove them, and I could use whatever lower height it will buy me, but I just wonder if anyone had issues with "loud" or "metal on metal" coil problems when hitting speedbumps or mild offroading?

2.The guys at Toytech convinced me to get their 3/4" spacers for the front. The guy said he ran this exact setup for years on his 2000 LTD, and the best ride and most level look he achieved was with Tundra springs, the 5100's on the very bottom perch, and the 3/4" top spacers.

In the back he ran 8 wrap LC coils with the stock rubber cones removed.

Does this sound like a legit setup for a daily driver, or was he just trying to sell the spacers? It would seems like I could just skip the spacers and run the 5100s on the second perch, and that would achieve the exact same height? His reasoning was that on the bottom perch, there would be no preload, resulting in a smoother daily ride. Let the spacer do the lifting work, etc.

Thoughts/advice. I'm doing this on Saturday, so I am making my last decisions on what to go with, as I would hate to have to pull the front struts and do it again if it's not what I want initially.

I did the Tundra TRD coils up front with the Bilstein 5100's (Tundra), set to the 3rd perch. I did LC 8-wraps in the rear, coupled with the Bilstein 5100's (for Tundra also - I just replaced the 1/2" bushing with a 3/4" one), and I DID have the rubber cones in them.

I didn't like the rake, so I ended up swapping the rears to OME 890's. Here is a picture of how it stood with the 8-wraps, though. Keep in mind, this is with 265/65/16 tires on it, which are smaller than what most guys have. I'm sure it would have looked better with the rubber cone stops removed, and with larger tires.

With the OME 890's it looks like this:

Hope this helps!

Thanks, that does help. The first picture is exactly the rake that I am trying to avoid. That is what confuses me so much I guess; if I find 10 different 4Runners with the exact same setup (Tundra/5100 - LC 8/5100) they all look different. Some are near level, and others look like something out of Mad Max.

I do have the larger stock tires, and I plan on removing the cones, so hopefully mine will turn out fine.

As of right now, I plan on running the rear with no cones, and the front on the bottom perch with the Toytech 3/4" top plate spacer, as per the tech's recommendation from Toytech.

Were you 8 wraps brand new or used? Mine are out of a 95 LC, so I am hoping they will sit a little lower than brand new coils.

What about a lesser lift?

Hopefully this is not a thread hack - looking for comparable advice.

I've near landed on OME 880/906 and 5100s, but as a DD, I'm now considering the softer ride preferred here with Toyota coils after Rickashay's assessment. I want a minimal lift though - I think the Tundra 5100s and coils will be too much. I'm looking for 1-2". Would the most comparable lift in terms of on-road comfort be the 99 tall coils with 4Runner 5100s? Is there a different Toyota OEM coil that would be up my alley? Or maybe just stock coils with the 5100s?

Thanks!

They were used, but they also sat in my garage for ~3 months before I did anything with them. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Lift

If you are looking to only add 1-2", then DO NOT go with the TRD springs and LC coils with the 5100. They will put you up in the air.

I was expecting some lift, but not as much as I got. I had 8 wrap LC coils and the 5100 on the 2nd perch with a Toytech 3/8" top plate spacer and it is definitley higher than I anticipated. It rides like a dream, but the stock 31"s look pretty small in there now. Unfortunatley they are almost brand new Wrangler Silent Armors (which I will never buy again due to their inability to be properly balanced....that's a whole different thread....and yes I know about the Roadforce machine and Haweka adapter), so I have to wait until they run out to get 33s.

Got any pics of the lift. I was planning on doing some adjustments, basically swapping to the LC coils.

Im having a hard time getting coil counts based on part numbers so any advise on where to find something like that would be very helpful.

Well, I found a part number on the Sonoran Steel site. Looks like its the one that he uses in his kit (48131-6A570), can anyone confirm how many wraps it is?

Here is what mine looks like on LC8wraps and tundra 5100s as well as the 5100s in front with the trd tundra coils in front.

I just picked up all my lift stuff to get this done. Tundra coils up front and LC 8 wraps in the rear. I thought long and hard about rake, setup, etc and just said screw it ill throw it on and see what happens and go from there. The guy who sold me the tundra coils was getting rid of them because of the rake so it made me paranoid again. Whatever, just gotta do it and see.
