ride comfort?

I own a 1998 4runner ltd since new. It still have the original coil spring (177,000 miles).Recently I bought a set of bilstein shocks that I have not install. What coil spring should I buy so I end up with a more pleasent ride? btw I only use the runner on city and high ways no off roading. I have only use original oem toyota partsas replacement,(shocks every 50,000 miles for example)THANKS for your comment in advance.Juan

I would recommend that you stick with OEM coils. Most aftermarket coils are designed for a lift or increased load carrying capacity and will probably make your ride firmer, which it sounds like you do not want.
I hope you bought Bilstiens shocks designed for comfort since they have a reputation as being very firm usually.
 
i think you need to change your sig to supra twin turbo "9"7.... as im pretty sure they arent made anymore... and its a truck, its not going to ride extremely nice on the road
 
Stick with the oem coils unfortunately. The only aftermarket you can find will give you a lift. If you have any sag at all in the rear it will make the ride worse when you install the Bilsteins so make sure it's level.
 
i disagree, the OME shocks made my truck feel much more comfy on the road, albeit taller, but still much more comfy

no, ive been in plenty of "comfy trucks" but not one has been designed to get out into the woods and play

the best ride he is going to get is either OEM or OME .

Those are pretty much the only options without changing other suspension components. Techno already said it, you're not going to get a more comfy ride with the standard Bilsteins.
 
you might also want to go with a softer shock if you're looking for a "more pleasant ride", especially considering the fact you are driving on pavement all the time. although many folks also find the firm ride Billies give as being pleasant.

He meant the truck was designed for NFL not powder puff touch. Meaning that your going to be hard pressed to get the 4runner to ride like a benz regardless of what springs/shock combo you put on.

never said if was gonna ride like a caddy or anything.. but there's no arguement that oem springs r goin 2 b softer ride on the road then springs made for off road.. thought that was common sense

Hello,

I see standard OEM coil springs are the consensus here. Could someone comment on Moog coil springs which are supposed to be OEM equivalennt (same standard height)? Also, any suggestion on variable versus constant rate (with bilstein shocks)?

I get my new Bilstein HD Shocks in tomorrow, so I will be installing those and new Toyota springs.

The 99 year came with two different coil options, one tall, and one short.

I originally had the short ones (which I believe are still taller than the 01) and I just got the tall ones.

I am expecting a much better ride out of them as well as increased ride height, I will pitch in to this thread when I can give you some good input as to how the vehicle performs afterwards.

So, ater reading all of the posts in this thread, I wanted to pose this question: Consensus is that OEM springs will give me the best ride, but will they improve the notorious rear sag of the original springs on my '02? I'm not looking to lift the 'Runner, but if new springs raise the rear an inch or so, I'd be just fine with that. I put on sensatrac shock/struts about 5K ago, and had some improvement in ride. My truck sags with a light load in the cargo area-2 golf bags! Can't imagine what the family vacation gear is going to do to it. Opinions or suggestions?
 
Assessment: Coils and Sway Bar Bushings Need Replacement

(Posted this on another thread in response to these same questions.)

Thanks Brian2sun, techno, champ306, hossmaster, and others for your suggestions.

Brought the 4Runner to a Toyota Dealer Service to have this checked (no diagnostic fee). Extremely experienced service manager took the time to provide direct analysis (on ground and on lift) covering all the points posted here.

1. Coils are definitely "tired" and rear is sagging slightly (noticeable when side-by-side to another 4Runner with new stock coils). Indicated by residual bounce, sagging rear, and ability to squeeze the rear coils by hand.

Will also replace a number of other bushings related to this replacement just in case.

2. Sway bar bushings are "worn" - there's a slight space where the bushing doesn't touch a portion of the sway bar allowing movement of the bar

3. Tie rods are fine

4. Ball joints are fine

5. Rack bushings are fine

6. New Bilstein shocks look fine - no leaks

Plan to purchase Toyota OEM coils (front and rear), sway bar bushings (front and rear), related other bushings, from ToyotaPartsZone.com... Approximately $400 + shipping. About 20% off list from this online vendor.

Original equipment (OEM) coils seems to be recommended on this and other threads for same height needs (no lift needed) + Bilstein HD shocks. Moog, Raybestos, and Husky Springs also make OEM replacement coils (about 50% the cost of Toyota OEM).
