Right rear axle leak

Is it recommended to change both sides if only the right side is leaking? Thanks!

Should only need to do the one side. My left rear axle seal is leaking (08 V8) and not sure how to remove the parking brake cable to get the axle out. Anyone know how to remove this cable? Special tool?

I just had a talk about this with my shop. I was having a front wheel bearing replaced and asked about checking the rear. He said he normally sees seal leakage when the rear wheel bearings are going.

Moral is: If you are replacing the seals, consider at least inspecting the rear bearings so you don't get surprised a few miles down the road.

You have to remove the rear caliper and rotor to get access to the parking brake system. I have found it easier to remove the lower spring between the two shoes and the adjuster assy., then it is easy to get access to lever that the parking brake cable attaches to. Once you have disconnected the cable end from the lever, there are two small bolts that hold the parking brake cable assy. to the back of the backing plate. Just be aware that it is easy to snap one or more of these bolts off, because they tend to corrode in place. Don't ask me how I know. :redbrick: If you do, then you have to replace the entire cable assy.
