Right when I'm Getting ready to buy a 4runner

So I've been wanting to buy a 3rd gen 4runner for a loooooonnnggg time and thats what led me to this awesome site. I finally have $ saved up to buy what I want but we just had a meeting at work the other day. They said they are going to lay off one person off at work in the position I'm in. I've been with this compony for 5 years and there is no guarantee for me to go back to entry level position. Furthermore I am the lowest person in seniority in the position (one move up) and one of the reasons i put in for the job was job security. I own a 1992 ford escort station wagon that i do not trust to drive 30 miles one way to work every day (i live one mile from work) and I know i am in a dying industry ( printing magazines). So i can buy my 4runner but have no money left in savings in case i get laid off or I can save my money but have no vehicle to travel to another job. FML. Hopefully I don't get laid off and can still buy a decent vehicle if push comes to shove. :ballchain:

Manure occurs, finally got my 2ng gen 4runner setup nice, then went and rolled it because some girl didn't stop at a stop sign. But i'm at least getting insurance money since it wasn't my fault.

Just have to keep rockin' and rollin' man.

I hear ya! Just got out of the printing industry. It's not dying, it's all going digital and everything is being brokered. So for us production/production management guys, get out while you can! The money isn't there for us anymore.

I would never assume people with more seniority are safer. Seniority can mean they are paid more or are closer to being able to take retirement. For a company trying to cut costs getting rid of the highest paid person can make a lot of sense.

How long until they make a decision?

On a side note I hate to hear about industries like this that are "dying off". I still buy a ton of magazines each month to add to my collection. I just wish I always had time to read them.

Yeah, in regards to printing, it's not dying off the least bit. They've just come out with so much new technology over the past 10 years that instead of taking 5 people to complete a job, it takes 1. Also, these big companies like gotprint.com and 4over.com and vistaprint are able to print for sooooo cheap that even big printing places are brokering out jobs to them and just marking it up and making more money by doing that than by keeping it in-house. That's when people start losing jobs. It's ridiculous.

I remember in a staff meeting a year ago the owner says to everyone, "Ya know, I could completely shut down production and lay all the production guys off and broker everything out and still make the same amount of money or more.... but I won't because I care about you guys." HAHA! WTF? What kind of boss says that. Just trying to scare the employees in thinking that they will lose their jobs..... but guess what happened. LOL

Hopefully we will know more in two weeks. They gave us an option to self select a lay off. If you want to take a severance package then the person with the most seniority gets the package. The thing is we all end up being paid the same once we are "topped out" and I'm the only one that isn't. I'm not extremely worried cause even though I'm the newest person in my position I can do more than a lot of people that have been there for 15-20 years in the same position with no desire to move up. I also volunteer to work any overtime I can and never give days away like most of the other employees do. From what I hear i will be safe but there's always the worst case scenario. Thanks for the well wishes and i will keep updating hopefully with a picture of a 4runner.
