Ring and Pinion???

*1987 4Runner SR5 V4 EFI, 165K* I'm new to this forum, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. Ok, so I was driving on the freeway one day and I started to hear a noise. Pulled over and tried to hear where it was coming from, no luck. It would mostly start making a noise when I would shift or let off the gas. I thought it sounded like it could be something in my transmission maybe a throw-out bearing, but didn't have time for a project like that so I let it go a few days, and it started to sound "better". About a week later I had an uncle who was stranded and needed a ride, I told him my truck wasn't running so hot but I would give it a go. Jumped on the freeway and things sounded great. No noise, almost back to normal. Picked him up and about halfway back, my truck totally locked up on me and we skidded to the side of the road. I thought my transmission went out, but I was still able to shift into all my gears, only it feels now like I'm towing a house. I kicked it into 4WD and it seemed better but not drivable, (which made for a funny double breakdown story). I talked to a savvy friend of mine who said that it's probably my ring and pinion in the rear axle. What do you guys think? And if so, anyone with any advice on the fix.

You could start by draining the diff. If there's bits of metal in the gear oil, next step would be to pull the diff and inspect.
If the gears are trashed, and if you have the common 4.10 ratio, you can pickup a used 3rd for $50 or so.

So if that's the problem, is it possible to disconnect my rear axle or the diff and drive in 4WD until I can find a spare?

You could remove the driveshft, but the rear axle will still turn.
But not under load, so you may be able to get by for a bit,
