I uses a Yakima 2" hitch 2 bike rack and it works well. It cost me around $170.00 and its the best spent money. If you need to get into the back, the entire rack tilts down without any problems. Since I keep my rack on the 4runner all the time since I use my bike at work on a daily basis, I dont have any problems with rust. It is painted with a black powder coat and looks better that the factory bike rack for a fraction of the price. I used to own a Thule, which is essentially similiar but I prefer the components better on the Yakima. As far as a hitch mount versus a roof mount, it depends on your personal needs like if you need the hitch to tow a trailer, then perhaps the roof rack would be better. For the most part. IMO the roof rack is a pain in the A**. Especially if you are not very tall by getting the bike on and off the roof and I cant imagine it helps in the fuel mileage as well. If the hitch mount is an option for you, its so much easier without loosing any space inside the 4runner by placing you bike inside. In addition, it keeps all of the dirt and grease outside of the 4runner.

jacal, I noticed a little piece on the back of the rear seat. Is that an additional piece to keep the rear tire in place?
