Road Bikes thread

So... I know this is a mountain bike community. With that said, I have been riding a cyclocross bike with road tires for about 4 years. I was riding to work often and riding at times for fun. Recently I have been riding mostly for fitness and my cyclocross fuji isn't has been a bit harsh and not as quick.

I'm looking to upgrade to a full carbon bike. Current bike only has a carbon fork. What is everyone riding out there? and pics?

I've got a Specialized S-Works Roubaix. Shimano Dura Ace gruppo with Enve wheels, bar and stem. I've been very happy with it.....no complaints whatsoever. Well, other than the 11 speed Shimano chain has serious longevity issues. It doesn't last for sh!t. The bike is 3 years old so it does not have disc brakes. Handles like a dream on descents.

Personally I'd stick with the cyclocross category. Much more versatile while giving up very little in aerodynamics/efficiency. Commuting to work you're not doing anything that you'd have a notiable gain from switching to road bike setup.

That being said I'd highly recommend checking out the carbon CX bike from Pivot. That would be my top pick at this point.

Fuji Team carbon bike here, Shimano 105, ultegra rear deraileur. Been riding that bike for 6-7 years. Get good tires, I love the Continental Ultra Gatorskins, haven't flatted with those. I need to upgrade to 25's cause I think my 23's are a little too thin and keep the ride a little rough. Also invest in a good saddle. I like my "split" or cutout saddle. 50-60 miles is no problem.

Mine is dated but a Colorado Cyclist purchase, Douglas, with 10 Speed Campy Record. Group is 10 years old but still rides like butter.

Fuji Roubaix here (pictured next to my stock wheels lol), which I'm in the process of selling for a MTB. Been a great bike, but my new tiny apartment only has so much room!

Don't rule out an alloy frame (with carbon fork). Aluminum road frames were out of vogue for many years and they had a reputation for being harsh, but advances in materials and engineering have resulted in some very impressive higher end frames at good price points. If your budget allows it, full carbon is great, but you can get a lot of value for a reasonable price with some of the better alloy frames.

If you are looking at full carbon frames, you are getting into a price point where it might be worth the investment to get a basic bike fit (no, not the "straddle the top tube" fit at a place like Performance) even before buying a bike. Aside from the later benefits of a good fit, you can use the numbers to narrow down the list of possible bikes based on geometry. Any decent tech can then replicate the numbers once you make a purchase.

I ride a 2010 Specialized Tricross - despite the name it isn't really a cyclocross racer (although it does share some features). The "tri" is that it crosses road, touring, and commuter bike needs.

It works for me primarily as a commuter. Pretty fast (relaxed road bike geometry, drop bars, 700/32 tires). Comfortable to ride upright in traffic including an extra set of brake levers (was a must have for me) and over gravel/road crap. Easily accommodates fenders/panniers. Carbon fork also soaks up the bumps and generous gearing (3 rings up front) when you want to take it easy.

I'm not much of a road biker, but it suits my needs for the occasional recreational ride. It also has hard points on the front and back for touring panniers (some day...)

I've had it for +5 years and will ride for a long time.

Scott CR1 comp

2012 Scott CR1 comp here. Went in wanting another fixed gear steel road bike; ended up with a full carbon bike. No comparison really. Stick with carbon fiber & a 105/Ultegra group set. I had to recalibrate my brain because carbon bikes are soooo much smoother & responsive than metal bikes. Tried cyclocross a few times & I really don't get it.

My only road bike is an Orbea Onyx. Full carbon , Ultegra 10, some Mavics. Fits like a glove after several fittings over the years.

Usually thousand miles or two a year, year round. Sadly been getting dusty lately.

Started looking for its replacement but what I want for my new one isn't quite on the market yet, or if it is I just can't find it.

I think mine is a 2010 :full carbon, 105 shifters, 10 speed, ultegra rear, FSA crank, 105 front derailleur, I need to bring mine in to get it checked out. I have a squeak that doesn't go away. My lower bracket appears to have cracked around 1/2" in from the bearing caps. Other than the squeak and the crack around the bottom bracket the bike has been solid. The frame is solid, but the cracks appear to be circumferential as if the bike was built with the bottom bracket cups tightened too much. I would buy it again. If your 09 has the same components, I'd say it's worth it for the components alone. Biggest two complaints are the wheels are low end and the factory saddle was painful.

Those last two are nice!! the trek SLR 8 is close to 5k!!! Geometry looks worth it

How do you like the Orbrea Onyx? Seems like a good setup for under $1000. Is it from the asian market?
