One of the reasons I choose the 4Runner was to make a monthly 1000 mile trip, all freeway from Little Rock to Austin and back. I had seen an increasing amount of truck and bus tires along the route especially from Dallas to Austin on previous trips in my Honda but had avoided any incidents.
On last months trip my 2011 SR5 had to run across a full truck tire at 65mph, no problem, hardly a blip.
This month at 70 mph a large piece of lumber, looked like a two by eight about 18 inchs long, was thrown directly toward us by a large truck.
No way to miss it, hit dead center of the windshield, thanks to the angle it struck and sailed over the roof with only some major scratchs on the glass.
Two months before we crossed the embankment to get to the access road to avoid a wreck just ahead of us.
It also made another trip in a rain storm at night that lasted almost 500 miles with no problem, I passed several cars and trucks that had hydro planed off the road.
For those of you considering the purchase, the Four Runner has done a great job for me and never even gone in four wheel drive. It is comfortable for this long trip and I am happy to find things are where we need them, from water bottle holders in the doors to easy to read compass, temp and time; easy to use cruise control or roll down back window. I rarely post anything on the web except over at IMDB, but I think this vehicle deserves a good word or several hundred I guess.
