Roaring sound.

I recently had my front wheel bearings replaced to fix a roaring sound that I was hearing and feeling on my 2000 limited 2wd. Wheel bearings were replaced at the stealership and I still have the same roaring sound.

Any idea of what it could be. Don't really want to go back to the stealership because they drained me on my last trip. I'm a DYI person so I'm willing to try anything to get a smoother quiet ride.

gears maybe or cv's ?what are teh conditions that the sound comes from, anything change under accel or deaccel?

Just normal driving on paved roads. No real change except it seems louder at slower speeds.

I replaced the front struts with a complete quick strut assembly and had an alignment.

pinion bearing? Does it seem to get louder if you let off the gas going down hill?

roaring never comes from any suspension components, it's almost always something in the running gear, wheel bearings,gears and associated bearings, cv's, even the u-joints on drive shafts can make that noise.

but nothing in your coil over assy or suspension will ever make that noise, roaring is caused by rotational movement usually.

as far as replacing that stuff you would have been better off replacing the wheel bearing yourself and paying the shop to do the r&p bearings, not that it's hard i just hate opening the diffs up if there is any other way and if your this far in might consider doing a re-gear while your in there if it is the pinion bearing it will cost a bit more but saves you the work in future if your going to go with bigger tires and the rest. that said new gears can be had for around $400 for both front and back. and the bearings/install kit is around $75-100, so $600 total you have new gearing, or you can just spend $100 and buy the install kit for the front and be done with it.

first though try jacking the front end up put it into 4wd and nuet and try spinning the wheels by hand and see if you can locate for sure where the sound is coming from.

Thanks very much for the replies but my runner is a 2wd. I guess it's not real common to have a 2wd on here.

u-joints are known to wear out. And grease the rest of the driveline up.

x2 on the u-joints. Mine went at around 120K. Only difference in your situation is that the roar got louder with speed. Couldn't hear yourself think after reaching 60ish on the highway. It was definitely a "roar", though. Could be the problem.

Oh, I've got the same thign going on with my t100 right now. Also look for an out of round tire. :hunter:

I was floored when i took my u-joint apart that there was no real visual cue that it was bad.
