Rock Auto issues

Happy Friday all!
Posting to see if anyone else has had issues with RockAuto parts?
I ordered two 43512-60191 Toyota front brake rotors Monday. They arrived yesterday totally destroyed in shipping (see pics). I am choosing not to use them and asked for a return/exchange. After sending pics of the box, the individual boxes and the rotors - they say I can return for less than I paid as they are not damaged visually and so should be good. Wondering if you guys would consider using them?
I used to manage an Autozone back in the days when they tried/cared and we had to handle and store rotors much better than the ones I received were handled.
What think you? Worth risking a life over? Anyone else get the "could care less" attitude from RockAuto?

I'd be curious to see what the actual rotors look like.

If the rotors look fine I wouldn't worry about it too much. They are heavy and tend to beat up cardboard boxes anyway. The last time I ordered rotors the UPS driver needed my help getting them out of the truck because the box was heavy(larger rotors than our 4runners have) and the box was pretty beat from shipping but the rotors looked great.

I have my fair share of issues with RockAuto when ordering parts for my BMWs and Mercedes but haven't ordered much 4runner related. RockAuto does seem to have slipped a bit.

I'm confused. Is your issue with the packing box or the rotors? If your issue is with the rotors why didn't you include a photo of the rotors. Brake rotors are built to withstand far more punishment than they could possibly receive in shipping. A little common sense would go a long way regarding this issue.

All I see here is mildly damaged packaging, not totally destroyed rotors. Whats wrong with the actual rotors?

The OP has valid point IMO...who here can say what damage was done to the rotors when they were thrown around like was needed to cause this damage?

Also, this just indicates shitty packaging on heavy items. Rockauto should know better.

I would tell my CC company and dispute payment and let them deal with it.

Even if you get the support of your CC company, you'll still have to deal with sending them back (meaning finding good boxes) and might even have to pay shipping, although I would not.

Good luck,

Eddie

Not sure why the shipping company wasn't mentioned once in here. Seems to me they are more of the problem.

I've seen worse. We get deliveries with forklift holes in um regularly.

There is no visible damage to the rotors that I can see... see being the key word here. I pay $60+ bucks for a genuine OEM rotor and expect them to be treated better. My issue was with packaging but I wanted replacement rotors that were not drug to my house under the truck.
RockAuto says they "look" fine so use them. They didnt choose to involve the shipping company... just look fine use them or return them we dont care.
Is that how you would want your shipment of anything showing up? Pizz poor customer service- guy packing didnt care how he did it, guy delivering didnt care how he did it, 5 people I had to communicate with to report an issue in shipping didnt care SO have to assume RockAuto doesnt care.
I do care and if they were $15 dollars and not on my daily driver I maybe would not care so much but lets suppose you took your car in to shop for work and they got those rotors in like that would you be ok with them using them?
I would not.
Not looking for sympathy etc... just a friendly PSA I guess.

I agree with you - I sure as hell wouldn't accept something like that.

Unfortunately you don't know who is really at fault, rockauto or the carrier (though it looks like rockauto should have packaged them better). Point is, fixing the issue shouldn't be your problem, it should be rockauto's.

Personally, I'd consider just disputing the charge with your credit card.

Coming from someone who does this stuff for a living, my guess is the box wasn’t packaged right. By that I mean that heavy items don’t mix with air pillow type packaging inside the box or even packaging peanuts once you get to a certain weight. The air pillow packing pops under weight and allows room for the item to shift around and the boxes end up looking like the OP’s. Even the packaging peanuts allow heavy items to shift to one side of the box and the item itself ends up taking damage since it’s not protected from handling at that point. More of piss poor packaging on Rock Auto’s Warehouse end of things than handling by Fed Ex. Take that for what it’s worth.

With that said, I agree that not knowing if there’s a bunch of stress fractures or whatever is not cool with me personally. Between heat buildup and clamping forces, I wouldn’t be comfortable with them personally. Safety is paramount and rotors cracking/ breaking are safety concern. I’d rather error on the side of caution, especially since I daily drive my runner and my family rides in it regularly. My $0.02.

I had calipers shipped to me (don't recall the vendor), they were bounced on the bleeder valve a few times and leaked from the start...

:snacker:

Having to pay for return shipping on the cores, eats up any savings from buying on the internet..

the packaging could have been better. but barring some physical/visible damage on the rotors themselves, I would have no problem using them.

what do the rotors look like?

I doubt the rotors were damaged, but that's really not the point here right. You purchase something, you kind of expect it to arrive in good shape. Its a decision you will have to make. This is one reason I try to buy local. Might pay a little more, but at least you see exactly what you are getting right off the bat.JMHO

I ordered a new wheel bearing from Rock Auto a while back and the box came damaged. The rotor itself was in good shape, but the cover you pop on was screwed up. I emailed them with photos and they sent a new one out immediately. I just shipped the screwed up one back in the new box.

I still like them. That's my limited experience.

"steel is steel"- Wrong! I used to magnuflux for a living as a boilermaker/pipe fitter. Packaged wrong was correct and handled wrong as well.

This is the BEST PART: From the website, regarding returns.....
What is your return policy?
Every part we sell may be returned within 30 days for a refund of the part price with the exception of liquids that have been opened (oil, paint) and Gift Certificates. Arrange your return on the Order Status & Returns page.

If a part doesn't fit, don't try to "make it fit" and risk damaging the part, your car, or yourself! RockAuto is not responsible for any costs exceeding the cost of the part, and we will not accept returns of parts that have been installed or modified.

To receive credit, a returned part must be complete and in its original, unmarked manufacturer's packaging. Cores must be returned in the box the new part came in. Returns may not be refundable if the part, or the manufacturer's box, is damaged while in transit to our warehouse.

Shipping charges are not refundable unless the return is due to our mistake. If you refuse delivery or the carrier returns a package because you provided an invalid address, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.

Ok if I get a dicked up box but not if they do in return. NICE

Should have not accepted the shipment like that. If left at the door, then I would have hauled the box back to the carrier store/facility or called them to pick it up without even opening the box.

I also believe that the damage was done by the carrier...even the best packed items can be destroyed by a carrier.

I also don't think the rotors are damaged, from what you have said...since we do not have any pictures. They receive much more force during braking than was exerted upon them during transit. Furthermore, have you ever had to hit a rotor or drum with a large hammer to get them off of a car?

It's like when I worked at discount tire in high school and we would drop tires down from the top rack (approx. 12' high). The amount of force the tires received from that fall pale in comparison to the forces received when driving over a pot hole or bump in the road at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 MPH.

Just my $.02.

Again, if you're going to try and get refunded, I'd start with the carrier.

Hey crappy Chinese packaging is not a rock auto only problem it happened to me with my warn vr12 winch a third of the box was missing bought on eBay.I think companies today serve the lowest price to compete with amazon and throw crap on everything else
