Rock Light Install

On my towrig and offroad Jeep I placed lights wherever they were needed. In my State, Rock lights of any type are illegal for On Road use. They are legal for offroad use only.

I avoid drilling into the frame unless absolutely necessary to avoid corrosion problems. There are typically bolt locations close enough to work for most purposes. I use a somewhat universal cheap LED light from Amazon. They cost around $8 each with a 1amp draw each.

I don't see why drilling in the frame would cause any kind of rust issue the frame is full of holes every foot of it from the factory. I do not believe drilling a hole in the frame will have any effect on how much it rusts. that is just a matter of the conditions the vehicle is in more holes or not.

Late to reply. When drilling you are moving the hard coat on the frame. The best way really to treat is to use a product called por-15. Yet even with this you can c
get the inside of the frame. Hence at some point it will rust. With the factory the coating is much better and I believe they do a vapor deposit on the frame itself. Getting the inside of the frame. Which is impossible for us to do. Best we can donis great as best as possible and watch for signs of rust.


Side note have had some of the other lights fail. Am going to look at a better product like rigid or Baja designs. But

Here's how I did it. Scroll down and you'll find a rough diagram. I melted two cables before I got it right. Been running them almost two years now. One light failed, and the manufacturer supplied me a replacement (under warranty) that wasn't compatible with the old controller. So then they sent me a new controller, but I haven't got around to installing it and the new light.

I mounted my lights to brackets I made, so I could easily replace them when they go out. The brackets are glued to the frame with marine adhesive, as I didn't want to drill into anything.
