Rock sliders, current options/opinions?

Hi all,

I’m doing a light Lifted mall runner type build. Nothing too crazy, 1” bodylift for now and some 32’s with stock 5th gen wheels. It’s a clean truck and I’m not planning on off-roading much, definitely not any rock crawling..


That being said i want to get rid of the running boards (limited model) and it looks like basically the only options for replacements is rocksliders since there aren’t many nerf or step up bar options for 3rd gens.

I like rock sliders and love how they look. Would prefer some that have a kick out so my dog can climb up in there more easily.

I’ve done some research and most threads on the subject at are years old. What’s the most affordable option these days keeping in mind i don’t necessarily need them to be amazingly strong and whatnot since i won’t b using them for off-roading.

There are lots of options out there, I'm sure there's a thread with a list too. I think it was addicted (Not sure off hand) that made some that could be used as a step with plating between the rails. Also, you can mount them lower to be used as a step if they won't see rocks. I mounted mine as high as I could to keep clearance. For my opinion, I love my Stubbs. High quality with a kickout. I think budget friendly is Trail Gear but some assembly may be required. If you want them for steps, keep them flat instead of angling up on the outside, and you can always add plates to the middles for a nice step for the pup/family/etc.

Some 4Runners have rock sliders already on them. I had a '02 with a set on, turns out it was a dealer installed option that you can find from time to time. I've seen others with them as well.

You can get lucky and find them at junk yards. Put some new paint on them and they are great.

Those tubular steps? I'd be curious to see a pic as well. I've never seen anything factory that you could actually drag across a rock and not break.

Just get some Nerf bars then. The money you save by buying cheap sliders like Trail Gear or 4x Innovations you're gonna lose by having to pay someone to weld them together and/or get them powdercoated. If you rattle can them you'll have keep up on the maintenance because they chip easily & rust.

I installed the 4x innovations sliders w/ kickout on my 00 limited , they are great . Gave me an excuse to buy a welder

No 4runner came with “rock sliders” LOL. Those steps are not a rock slider. Nerf bar is not a rock slider. You want rock sliders. You’ll have to buy them and weld them. If you have a friend who can weld. That will be cheapest. Or find a local welder who would weld them on for you. Some companies make them ready to weld. Trail gear makes them where you have to weld the legs to the rock sliders. Then weld them to the frame. This allows you to adjust the angle. And they are probably the cheapest.

They were pretty heavy and had rubber inserts on top of the tube near each door to make getting inside easier for those of a shorter composition.
