Rock to the Windshield (Darn it)

Not even a year old I got a star on my windshield yesterday. Shit. I was driving east on I80, in the second lane from the divider near Hackensak and I saw the rock come flying from the other side. It was big enough to see and I tried to avoid it but it was coming too fast.

These roads in and around New Jersey blow goats.

About 2 hours after chip happened I had it filled at Safelite in Pinebrook. I didnt want to wait and have it fill up with water, freeze and become a large crack. State Farm has a negotiated price with them of $95.

They had to clean out the hole to fill it and that left a spot about the size of a BB.

I lived in CO when I bought mine. Got my windshield cracked all the way across less than 2 months after I bought it. It's still like that a year later. I'll fix it eventually, I guess.

I got a rock chip within one week of purchase of my new 4Runner. Quickly went into a long crack. Still have it. Have not replaced it yet.

$95 for a chip repair? Ouch! My local Tecniglass charges $20 for a chip repair. Some glass shops are free chip repair if you have insurance; don't know what they bill the insurance company though.

I feel your pain, man. I had to have my windshield replaced one month into ownership due to a rock strike that caused a big crack.

Then on top of that I cheaped out on the replacement and went with aftermarket glass. The glass itself is fine and the overall install is fine but the aftermarket moldings kinda look like crap. It's one of those things that the average person wouldn't notice but me being a stickler notices it every time I look at it.

I just got windshield #3 installed last week (2019 w/36K). Had a rock fly up and chip it yesterday already, that's pretty neat.

Gotta love driving on mountain passes during weather and lots of sand (aka rocks) being dumped and then thrown up by every truck driving by in the opposite direction.

I'll be getting it sealed this week, only replaced the second one because the crack had grown to ~30" long.

Winter time definetly sucks as far as cinders n such getting kicked up. If people would just hold there normal line instead of always veering away when passing a vehicle in the opposite lane...a lot of chips n crack would be avoided.
We have been lucky to not have to any windshields replaced other than a few used vehicles that got done shortly after we purchased them.
? for you guys that had several windshields replaced on the same vehicle....what does your hood n grill area look like ?

I went 21 years without cracking a windshield but have had 3 replacements in the past 4 years. OEM replacement for the 2020 4Runner was $1,700. I had it replaced in August and am going in again this week for another. Fortunately I have a $0 deductible for glass.

I had this happen on the parkway about a week after I bought my 19.

Same spot as yours too. Safelite did the same repair. Don't even notice it anymore.

I have added coverage on my auto insurance for the front windshield which raises my premiums but worth it.

I had 2 chips, both repaired, in my windshield. While in the mountains driving slowly through the snow, with my defrosters all on, I heard a CRACK and noticed this, the crack ran through both chips. I suspect it may have been thermal stress.

There's a repair kit on Amazon for like $10 that I've used to successfully repaired a few chips.

I have two rock star repairs already on my 2019.

In the past, I had a small star on a previous car facing east outside on a below freezing morning. As soon as the sun hit it, it cracked all the way across. Thermal stress is a good bet.

got mine 1 month into owning the vehicle while driving to tahoe. cranked even bigger since it was cold. i sealed it when i got home and the cracked havent spread any further since.

The glass alone on a 2020 with the little collision stuff is like 1500. I also had to wait for it to be special ordered.

I also don’t pay extra for this coverage, it’s included. I think it’s only once a coverage period though, so like twice a year?

It would have been no charge regardless of carrier since SC state law prohibits insurance companies from imposing a deductible on safety glass. They add to premiums in states that mandate deductible free glass replacement. It is not the same in all states. Not included with my State Farm policy in Nevada for example.

I got one within the first month of ownership here in Seattle. Unfortunately, the 4Runner has a fairly steep windshield, although not as bad as the FJ Cruiser, so it's pretty expected, even when giving TONs of distance between cars. Got it repaired and it's barely noticeable now, but I've also received 3-4 smaller ones since then.

Seems to be a right of passage with new cars. I had mine for less than a month when I got a tiny one, looks like a waterspot and has been fine ever since.

The next day an empty dump truck hit a big ass bump and sprayed loose rocks all over the road, somehow I got lucky with only 3 small paint chips and the window stayed chip free...

Which DIY windshield repair kit do you guys recommend? I just had my windshield replaced because a rock chip spread across the entire windshield whenever I used the defroster.

Would like to keep one of those repair kits handy the next time this happens so I have a fighting chance of keeping it a chip versus a crack across the entire windshield.
