Rocksliders as steps

I like the looks of the pics that I've seen of rocksliders that can double as steps(ie. Shrockworks and Relentless). The reality is that there's a 99.9999% chance that they would never slide over a rock. So, are they worth getting for the looks and the functionality of steps?

Yes, as they will protect your rockers from accidental damage on the trail (rocks, trees, logs that you rub over). I'm actually in the market for a set of sliders after owning my 4runner for alittle over a year, the only reason I havent purchased them sooner is because my then 4 yeard old had a hard enough time getting into the rig with the running boards. She's taller now and I don't think that it will be a problem.

I got mine from Shrockworks for my Limited and absolutely love them. My 6 and especially my 4 year old was struggling to get in and out. Since they have no fear, I cringed every time they jumped out.

I had running boards and steps for other trucks and hated it them when they flexed or eventually loosened. This is partly because I am a heavy guy. I also find them too low which I had them damaged by high curbs and ice piles. The Shrockworks are bolted to the frame, so there is no flex of any kind. These things are solid. It's definitely a much more expensive option, but I was able to save a few bucks from the last group buy.

I think they are definitely worth it. I'm waiting on the paint to dry on my Hefty sliders and they will go on next week.
I don't do a lot of off road but the added protection is a big upside for just a bit more money.

My buddy got T-boned in his Tundra with sliders and the damage was minimal to his ride but hammered the car that hit him. Sliders helped him a lot.

Yes.

They have many uses: Sliders, steps, jack points (be very careful doing this and suggest welding them on if you do this), door ding preventer, etc.

I have the Shrockworks ones, and as mentioned then are great for family use, and I have a few dings where they basically saved my door from a rock and tree as I had a bad line.

Built my own on my tundra. They work as a step and protect from door dings. I will soon build some for my 3rd gen 4Runner.

I highly suggest C4Fabrication if you want something to double as a step. They maintain a nice degree of slant to keep them tucked up, while providing a flat step.

Here are my Shrockworks Step-Sliders I installed this past weekend. Love them as Steps & door ding protection... oh, and the occasional log I may have to slide over :reddance:

I use my c4 fab sliders as steps. Sure you have to step higher but I have perfected entry and exit with them. I prefer them over steps 100%.

I had MetalTech and they aren't that great as step to enter the vehicle, but they work great as a step to access the roof rack.

I had All Pro Off-Road Sliders on my Taco. I Line-Xed them and the were great. To high for a step and a little in the way getting in and out. They are great for doing what they are intended for and eliminate any door dings!

I had MetalTech and they aren't that great as step to enter the vehicle, but they work great as a step to access the roof rack.

I actually just ordered a set of the OPOR sliders from them this past weekend to replace my N-Fab steps. I took some trails on Saturday and bumped them a few too many times for comfort. Both mine and the wife's. No scratches or dents, just close calls and still hope to sell them once the sliders are in.

When I called them the guy I talked to said that the Metal Tech sliders had a more aggressive upward angle than the OPOR. Were the MT ones that bad as a step for shorter people? It was really hard to pass up bolt on sliders for under $450. And since they are local, no shipping!

Here's my take....

I have C4 sliders with the bolt-on step pad (yes, they call them step pads):

For practical reasons, you're better off getting N-Fab nerf bars or the factory steps if your intention is to use them as actual steps.

The reason I say this is that although I use my sliders as steps, they really only help for reaching into my roof rack. Do they help when stepping into the cabin? Slightly. I find that my sliders get in the way when stepping out. If you're 6' plus, you'll be fine.
Also, I don't see them being all that useful for small children. Factory steps are much lower and will provide an appropriate intermediate transition step into the cabin. Sliders are basically at the same height of the cabin floor.


So in the end, it comes down to what your needs are and what's important to you.

must have addition. Just be careful with kids. I had a friend whose kid got their foot stuck in the slider and the fire department had to be called to cut the sliders apart and let the kid's foot free.

This is probably a good pic to illustrate what he was talking about. They can certainly still be used as a step, but with the upward angle of the bumpout parts they're simply not that much lower than lifting your leg all the way into the vehicle.
