Rollover angle

This thread has pretty much answered my question as to how much of an angle our rigs can traverse before tipping. I doubt, as others have said, I will push the mechanical capabilities past my pucker tolerance. I will be trying a hillside trail with a few boulder outcrops soon but from the image angles shown here they probably won't exceed 25°. My other question is how much diagonal force can the connecting structures of the front a arms and rear wheel components handle before failure? Jetboy's pic above visually shows it's pretty high. [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] maybe you could speak to that? Also what are the connection points called where the a-arm point and the control arm?! meet the wheel hub? Blocks 1 & 11 of the diagram below. Second pic is of the trail with out crops. Hill side, dry, firm but narrow on slope with trees below. Narrow margin for error. All in all tame compared to what I've read here. Any guesses on the angles? My rig is stock pro with sliders and steel tank skid lowering cog.

I believe it is called the "spindle" or "steering spindle" which makes it sound quite week lol!

Have fun trying the 4Runner on the pictured trail! I'm sure once you see how solidly the vehicle goes through that you will confidently look for incrementally bigger challenges! That's what it's all about! And of-course each time you want to try something bigger your wallet is going to get lighter as you mod more in preparation!

Thanks those connecting points do look vulnerable but evidently can handle the weight of the vehicle diagonally. As far as bigger challenges, that's what I'm afraid of. The t4r is my daily and I need it to last along time. Just some RCI steel skids up front, an Undercover HWMS and a winch and that's it. Any crazier and I'll be looking for an old 4x4 jeep or pick up with a solid frame to build into a rock crawler. Something that if it breaks or rolls over, I won't be sobbing on the side of the trail. lol
 
So after more research,

The main component in block 1 is a steering knuckle and in block 11 is the lower control arm. No distinction regarding the tip.

Silly me. I wasted my time getting a degree in computer science when I should've been learning stuff that matters. lol
 
IMO
As when adding a lift, tires and steelie extras each truck is going to handle differently.
That being said driving it is going to be your only true test.
You have to put it through it's paces in every condition to see what it can or can't do.
At Hwy speed there's not much you can control so try not to put yourself in a bad situation.
With the articulation I have it feels like Im hugging the ground.
I've yet to have any scary moments.
You owe it to you and yours to experiment wisely while respecting the vehicle.
 
I have been wondering about this subject, and this thread inspires me to ask: what is the max angle, front-to-back and side-to-side, that a 4runner can safely traverse?

Anybody here flipped or rolled a vehicle off-road?

Yes, I was a passenger in a roll-over, not once, but twice, and it was not really "off-road", it was in a field...damn Bronco IIs...
 
Had an FJ

Before my T4R, I would take my girls (young) out in the FJ. When we got to anything "scary", I would tell them to keep an eye on the gauge... so that if we rolled, we would have concrete data for the next time out... :-)

Naw, just attach a come along or a chain with a turnbuckle to a tree and the frame. Just have to be careful.

Just resurrecting this old thread... did anyone actually try this? Would be curious to verify the earlier comment that the 4Runner was designed to 42 degrees.

I think our interest in rollover is primarily at low speed, therefore we can safely ignore momentum effects and racetrack embankment analogies.
Rocks and slippage are big factors of course.

Additionally, a better way to measure the "pucker" angle would be along the diagonal axes of the truck (LR to RF and RR to LF) which would
measure the combined effect of pitch and roll. This video highlights the pucker:

Yes, the spotter is an idiot, but it shows that the pucker doesn't necessarily stop everyone.
