Rolls backwards in drive???

So test dove a 2001 4runner, came up to a hill and let my foot off the brakes and the 4runner started rolling backwards (which is normal), but it continued to roll as if I was in neutral. Usually, or at least every automatic I've owned would stop after a foot or two.
Is this normal for the 4runners, or is this signs of a potential expensive issue?

Meant to type "in drive", not "in park". That'll teach me to try and multitask.

By your title, I'm assuming that you put the truck in park prior to this test, correct? If so, and you are sure that you were completely in park, then this would be a cause of great concern. Park is certainly not to be used as a kickstand, using the parking brake prior to shifting into park is always recommended, but still, a truck rolling backwards while in park is not normal.

holy crap, a foot or two isn't normal. It should be a couple inches at most.

Could have snapped the parking pawl? No engagement if that's what happened = no park.

What I thought, as well. Also, if it will not start while it's in park, if you have to shift it to neutral, it might be as simple as it not actually ever getting into park due to a bad shift linkage. That would be the easiest fix.

Big slip on my part, meant "In drive" not "Park".

Was trying to do two things at once, all while having the lady talking in my ear about what so-and-so did.

Seriously? There isn't enough power at idle to hold itself depending on how big the hill is.

My initial thought was idle was set low because the car wouldn't idle along like most cars. Also, once you put it into drive or reverse, and let off the brake (on a flat surface) it just sits there until you give it gas. At a stop light, the idle drops to around 500, almost inaudible. Run great one you give it gas though.

If I'm understanding your description correctly, your in drive, and stopping on a hill. You take your foot off the brake and the truck rolls back while still in drive and your wondering why the truck doesn't hold it's position.

Mine will hold but it depends on the grade.
This in many standards, is refereed to as "hill assist" but usually is to a maximum if 5 or 10 degrees of incline.
