Ron Burgundy the 2002 SE 4runner

I just made this video to introduce our newly purchased 2002 Toyota 4Runner Sport edition SR5 2wd.

I bought this vehicle for a great price and I have some great ideas of things I would like to mod, fix, or upgrade right away. I made this video to kick off the build thread on T4R.org that will show everything that gets done.

Naomi thought of naming him Ron Burgundy and I thought it was perfect!

I think it will be cool to look back on this video to see where it all began.

Battery/alternator issue

wife and kids were stranded yesterday due to a bad battery (salesman said it was brand new). Autozone said the battery was bad after leaving it with them overnight.

I just bought new battery and the indicator light is still on, which from what I have read, could be the alternator.

Im going to clean all connections and replace battery terminals and then take to autozone to see if I still need an alternator

That very well could be the alternator. Could be a new battery with a bad alternator and the truck ran that battery completely dry and un-rechargeable.

Easy enough to have them check the alternator if you take it back.

01-02s never came with E-lockers, just a center diff lock on the 4wds.

Problem identified

So I was working on the battery connections and before I did the negative terminal, I saw that the friggin alternator belt was missing!

So the puzzle is solved.

The alternator belt snapped, the one I thought was causing a squealing sound on occasion and that I hope isnt a bearing of some kind. yea that one haha

So i bought a new belt and cant seem to find a good install video, so I guess I will have to make one.
However I have to go to work now, but will start bright and early tomorrow.

I know I have to take the skid plates off and I can drape the belt over each fan blade to pass it through there, I guess?

Is there a good write up or how to already? Could def use help with this and if there is any info you would like me to include in the video.

Here's a drive belt video courtesy of Stir_Fry_Boy

The belts are pretty easy once you locate the adjusting bolts. I was able to remove my AC belt a few weeks ago during my lunch break to diagnose a knocking compressor. I recommend not going without AC in June in Houston.

Since it's the rearmost belt, yes.

I am amazed that someone sold a vehicle with an inoperable charging system. Must be a pretty good battery for it to have run as long as it did before you really had an issue. Almost as amazed that you bought a vehicle with an inoperable charging system, lol...


Or did the belt break while your wife was driving, perhaps? I see it spinning there in the video you made.

yes the belt broke a week after we bought it, while she was driving it. everything was working fine, I did plan on replacing the belt also but it broke before I could get to it. I sprayed that exact belt with dressing too because I thought it was causing a slight squeal on occasion.

Keyless Entry/Door Locks Fixed

Changing the battery and terminals seems to have taken care of my issue with the keyless entry/door locks being wonky.

I guess its not too bad that this happend because it helped resolve the only other issue that was very important to us to have working properly.

Door Locks and Keyless entry working perfectly now.

I found the old belt

I guess the old belt didnt snap but got annihilated instead. pretty crazy.

So i put the new belt on one and drove it to autozone, they said the alternator was bad.
I was filled when joy when I was able to purchase one hahah.

Today I will be installing the new alternator. because of yesterdays work, it should be a lot easier to do

also I replace the negative battery terminal and now the door locks/keyless entry are wonky again. FML

Alternator Tensioner bolt broke

the bolt snapped somehow, not sure how, but I am very strong. Haha jk

I went to autozone and they had nothing. Orielys and Lowes both had the bolt pictured. The lowes hardware guy really tried to find something like it but this was all he had. I did buy washers to act as spacers if need be, but take a look at these photos taken before it was drive. The bolt is a tight fit so the abrasions are from ratcheting in not from driving.

The first is the Alternator before I touched the tensioner bolt. The second is the broken bolt with the new and third is the new bolt in place without washers. should I add them to he right side?

I drove it like that to autozone and they said that the alternator was bad. So i'm going to replace it. The battery light in the instrument cluster went away when I added the belt though which is good but I guess doesnt mean that its is working?

Correct alternator adjustment Bolt

Hey there guys, I found the correct bolt with full thread.

Like John madden used to say, Ace is the Place.

Ace hardware was the only place out of all the places I went to; AutoZone, Oreilys, and Home Depot, and Ace of course

Here is a photo of the correct full thread m8 - 1.25"x90 bolt along with the broken one and the incorrect semi threaded bolt that everybody tried to sell me.

the next photo shows the correct bolt installed.

Everything works great!

I was able to get really good footage and will be making a video on replacing the alternator and belt.
