Roof Box outside the side rails

Has anyone mounted a roof box (Thule/Yakima type) with one set of clamps/claws outside the side rails?

I'm trying to determine how wide I want to go with load bars to carry my Thule Force large box and a surf board or two next to it.

I got 56 or 8-inch bars. Clamps are mounted on the outside of the Rails. I went as long as the width of the fenders. Zoom in on this picture you'll see it. Hope this helps.
