Roof mounted lights

Has anyone mounted small lights to their roof? I would like to mount some small auxiliary lights to my stock roof rack. I dont really need the projector style driving lights, just something mounted higher that I will angle to the sides. I just want something I can flip on for a second to light up street signs when Im driving in dark snowy areas (turning the high beams on pretty much just reflects off the snow and blinds me). Basically I just want the option to get some light higher up and out to the sides. I am hoping to mount the lights to the underside of the stock crossbar so that it will not interfere with my ski/snowboard rack. If wiring up to the roof is too complicated I suppose I can mount some lights in the grill and angle them up slightly.

Anybody have experience running wires up to the roof or any general input regarding offroad lighting?

Check out these lights that I just installed. You can probably see them at your local Pep Boys. Pretty small, about $40.

I saw your post a bit ago, and I'm definitely installing those as backup lights as youve done. And the thought did cross my mind to put those on the roof as well. With 100W bulbs in and a good spread Im sure theyll do the job, and without causing a lot of wind turbulence etc. due to their small size. Ill probably go ahead and order 2 kits now that youve 'seconded' the idea of throwing them on the roof as well.

Oh and the fact that it doesnt snow in Santa Barbara or anywhere near SB is why I need the lights . Gettin off work at 5pm on fridays gets me on the road by 6 after I pick up friends + their gear, then 6 hours later Im in Mammoth or 8 hours later Im in Tahoe. Either way I end up trying to find a rental condo between midnight and 2am and it gets DARK up in the mountains.

it was actually pretty easy running the lights to the roof, im going to redo my wiring soon and i cn possibly do a write up

Side lights or alley lights are great. I put mine on the frame not on the roof. Kind of hard to see. Just a round $10 tractor light. I have one on each side. They do not hang any lower than the frame and can be rotated any direction.
