Weather kind of sucks for projects now but this has been on my mind.
Has anyone installed a NMO antenna connection on the roof of a 3rd gen and care to share any tips or tricks?
Everyone cringes at the idea, but yes, I actually might drill a hole in the roof. A good NMO install does not present much risk of leaking anyway, but this is my "beater" truck, and I'm fond of it, but not to the point I'm scared of installing an antenna.
With NMO I'll have the ability to change my mind later, but for now my goal is a 2M only whip. I've had the radio (Yaesu FT-1500M 2 Meter only) finished for some time ready to install in the DIN pocket under the broadcast radio, but without an antenna, kind of pointless.
For one, since I have the moonroof, I know I need to be careful of that, so it looks like I need to stay toward the rear.
I do NOT want to pull the headliner. I almost see no way around it unless I can fish the cable over to the edge and catch it somewhere. Any ideas?
Any cable routing ideas as well? Think I can keep the cable under the headliner then come down the A pillar and run behind the dash?
Thanks for any tips, probably won't start on this soon but if a fair weather day happens to come up might be a quick project.
