Roof Rack advice

The hitch carrier is nice, because cargo is nice and low. But the basket is always there. Keeping weight over the axles is something to consider, if your suspension isn't up to snuff.

I've got a 3/4 rack/basket and it's nice to know the space is there when I'm not traveling local. Otherwise it's empty. I lose 1-2 mpg with the basket. Decent compromise, IMO.

I have always wondered this. If you lay down a blanket why can't you ratched down a load straight on the roof?? Do we have to have a basket?

Shouldn't need a blanket, there are cross pieces that sit directly on roof. If you can get it secure, you can do it! Cars strap stuff to roof without rack all the time, it just may not be as secure.

I use both a hitch carrier and a roof basket; The only disadvantage I can think of I've come across with the hitch carrier is that I've needed to get to something in the back of my truck (which was then blocked by the carrier). Minor inconvenience. It's been very handy though, especially during hunting season; just strap the deer to it and go.
I've got just a basic Curt basket with extension up top; it's sitting on three crossbars to help disperse weight (pulled an extra from the junkyard). It's an inexpensive way to go. I've found roof racks to be a magnet for rust....I removed mine and bondoed up the holes, same as that rear window spoiler gizmo. plus I like the look better without that crap....ymmv

I mean, if you have some luggage or some other stuff that you want to throw up there. I have 3 rows and once they are up, there is barely any room so if in lieu of doing any additions I want to be able to just strap stuff to the top

I tried that with a spare tire and it still made the soft part of the roof shake / bounce / rattle

I imagine a bunch of weight would do that, lol. I don't trust OEM load bars that much, I've had eyelets bust on the bars and for the 3rd gen, it's just a little stainless nut (2 per bar) that hold everything down. The rack I made is secure in 6 points total, and I would like it to be even more secure than that for side to side shifting.

I think I am going to try it with luggage someday and it won't be ratcheted to the cross bars but the side ones as well. Just don't know if want to have a whistling basket up there all the time that bolts on to the factory apparatus anyways
