Roof rack advice?

I'm having the same problem you are. I can't seem to find a rack I like and don't have a lot of use for the Toyota crossbars.

I'm prototyping a design that will allow me to mount 80/20 rails on my existing roof rack. I've got someone 3d printing the plates this weekend to test out. If it goes right, it'll be a good cheap solution.

Concerning your setup:
1. The 7/8 LFD rack on their website shows 8 crossbars. Your pics seem to show only 3?
2. Did you use a combo of steel and aluminum crossbars?
3. You also use a Rhino Rack basket on top?
4. How tall above the roofline is the top of your setup? (Minus the duck)...

1. Yes, I already had some crossbars. So, I didn't get the full setup.
2. Yes. 3 Steel (where the RTT or the Rhino Rack Mesh go) and 4 Aluminum (for accessories - more pix later)
3. Yes. This is a Medium sized Rhino Rack Mesh (not basket) that I got on eTrailer.com
4. Dunno, but I will measure it when I get off work and let you know.

I see what you mean about the 3 crossbars. I started with 3 of the original design in steel. I love them - so much so that I got their full rack + 4 aluminum crossbars. The new crossbars are of the new design where the holes to mount to the side rail are open slots. This makes mounting them so much easier. So, I have 7 in total, and I am very happy with that configuration!

Other than Gobi anyone have good experiences with a no drill full length rack? Just hate to bite the bullet on 12-16 week fab time it hurts

Nice rig! I am deciding between Prinsu and the LFD at the moment and have been staring at your rig for awhile now. Do you ever wish you had crossbars with slots like the Prinsu? It would certainly make it easier to mount things and more adjustable.

I originally wanted to go with a slot design, but the simplicity and efficient design of the LFD bars has me not looking back. I will be taking more pics this weekend as we are going to remount the awning and the RTT for our trip to Colorado next week.

Also, several people have told me that the slots get junk/mud/dirt in them that makes them difficult slide things in. The LFD design doesn't have that issue.

Another point to think about: once you mount something, are you really going to be adjusting it much?

So, we are experimenting with crossbars with slots instead of holes for more flexibility... So far so good. We're not sure yet if it'll be a range-wide option or just on the full racks.

Im gonna do the same, but I think I will go with the 3/4 length. I have 2 steel and 2 aluminium now, so I'll go with 4 more aluminum when I'm ready for the full rack

When I ordered mine a few months ago, I had to message them on Facebook. they are about 30$ more then the steel ones.

Am I just an idiot that I can't find the aluminum bars on the site?

We don't have them on the website, we're not really pushing individual aluminum Crossbars in order to keep the stock up for the complete roof racks.

We also don't think there's a big enough difference when using them on the factory rails to justify the extra cost. We've even debated discontinuing the aluminum on the complete racks too, we're just not sure there's an advantage there.
