Roof Rack and Hitch Setups HERE!

Anyone know where I can attach some PDFs? They are too large for the forum attachment. Sent the prints off to a buddy who has a machine shop. We'll see what the cost is...
 
Finally got around to hobbling upstairs and getting on my imac, which has a handy-dandy feature to turn .pdf into .jpg.

The full assembly:

The upper piece that fits into the Thule bar and the roof rail groove:

I am not to sure about the design. 1 the crimp affect on the rails if you tighten to much. 2 How much they will hold.

I would maybe try to use like a t-nut in the rail and have the part that bolts to the rail on the side kinda like the stock ones

That's the $50 bike rack that I've been using. It holds two bikes perfectly!

Cargo Crossbar removal

My new 4Runner came with some Cargo crossbars and I have no intention of ever using them. Does anyone know how to take them off or where I can find instructions for removing them? It certainly doesn't seem like it would be a big job, but I have been wrong before. Any help is appreciated. If it helps, they are OEM cargo crossbars.
 
My needs are for transporting bicycles and kayaks. I purchased Thule stuff, though I think Yakima(from what I saw) would have been just as good.

The base rack system is Thule 5058 which includes 4 footers, 2 square 58-inch crossbars, 4 locks. They are slightly long extending like 6 extra inches beyond the rack on each side, but it actually looks fine to me. I thought about cutting them down but decided it wasn't necessary.

For the bikes, I went with the hitch mounted Thule 990XT, same as JPowers further up in the thread. It is the lighter duty and less expensive version which is more than sturdy enough for transporting 2 bikes for me.

For kayaks, I got the Thule Hullavator Pro's - however I haven't used them yet so I can't speak to how well they work yet. This is a good option if you need to transport 2 kayaks.

I have some whistling caused by the crossbars (makes noise only when sunroof is closed), so I guess I need to buy the stupid fairing thing. My bike shop dealer advised me to order the 44-inch model. I thought this could be a problem since the rails are about 43" apart. My dealer told me I'd be able to use included extenders and angle the fairing below the rails - we'll see. The 38 inch would look stupid, and probably not solve the problem.

Now all I need is a trailer for the motorcycle :)

You need to take a small, flathead and remove the 4 end caps. This is done by inserting the screwdriver between the rubber seal and the end cap on the outside of the car.

There are 2 clips on the inside of the caps that hold them on, so you just need to pry them off, if you work from the front to the back with the screwdriver, you can feel the clips and they pop off. It is easy and takes less than 5minutes to do all 4.

Once you do that, you just slide the rails off and put the end caps back on.

Do the SR-5 and Limited have a different cross bar design than the Trail Edition? On the Trail you simply loosen the tie downs, flip the bar up vertically and slide it off the pins. There was a card in the glove compartment detailing the procedure.
look at the photo in post #46, it shows the tie down loop on one side of the bar fitting and the pin on the other side of the bar fitting

was looking for a 5 bike carrier hitch. Was thinking about the yakima double down 5 or the Thule Roadway 5 Bike Hitch Carrier. What are your guys thoughts? Has anyone have any problems fitting 5 adult size bikes on any of these racks? I dont mind paying a little extra for a better product. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanx guys
 
I have a DoubleDown 4. It would be hard to fit 4 bikes on there, but its possible. They will all be touching, front forks rubbing, pedals getting stuck together, etc... not that big of a deal, unless you have little patience and are prone to frustration like me... I'm guessing the 5 would be the same way.
 
quick question about the yakima loadwarrior, can you mount a yakima snowboard rack to the top of the loadwarrior?

Thanks for your input dbjasper. I've decided to get the yakima double down 5. Do you recommend any lock system? I'm deciding on this one Amazon.com: Yakima LockUp: Sports & Outdoors.
 
I once saw a mount for a hi-lift that clamps onto the stock Toyota Cross bars. I haven't been able to find it since then, does anyone have an idea of where I can find this product? It looked nice and I would have a nice secure way to transport a Hi-Lift outside the vehicle.

This is a great thread. I bought a trunk mounted bike rack for my Subaru Outback Sport and really don't like it. (It's been a couple of years, but I'm probably going to return it to REI as I've only used it twice because it's kind of a pain taking on and off and I use the trunk pretty often.) When I get my 4Runner I'll be getting a hitch mount, preferably one that swings out of the way so I can keep it on all of the time.
