Roof Rack cargo options?

My '02 has the factory roof rack. I've downsized from a Tahoe, so less cargo space. Still love this 4Runner though!

What are good options for adding extra cargo area to my roof rack?

I've looked around online at Thule, X-Cargo (Sears), and a few others. There's plenty of options available it seems, and I'm a bit overwhelmed. Hard box or soft, what size, hard box or soft, etc?

Any suggestions?

would highly highly reccomend a yakima load warrior cargo rack.

I 2nd the Yakima since it uses the factory rack and is an on/off procedure in under 10 minutes.

I went with a Thule soft pack. inexpensive easy to load and attach. can take it off easily to avoid theft. can be ordered water proof if needed.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm thinking now a soft back might be the better way to go for the reasons mentioned. It would be easier to store also.

I didn't see any mention about being able to order them water proof. I can contact Thule about this, but if you have a link or other information to pass along, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestions. But I apparently didn't make my original post clear - sorry.

I already have the optional factory/dealer installed roof rack. I'm not looking for anything different "hardware" wise, in that since.

When we travel, the two of us and our large dog (Collie), we're not going to have as much space now for suitcases plus all the other "extras." Especially when we visit the in-laws and they are kind enough to send us home with enough groceries to last a month. A pain to load/unload, but I'm grateful.

So, what I need is a way to temporarily store some of that cargo using the existing roof rack until we get home.

I'm trying to decide between a hard box or soft bag style. If the soft bag will keep things dry enough for a short trip, then it seems to be the way to go.

Then when we get home and after I've unloaded it. I can easily take it off, roll it up and store it without taking up as much room as a hard box.
