Roof Rack Christmas lights

I know last year I saw people that had run christmas lights up on their roof racks...

anyone doing that this year? Pics?

anyone have an idea on the legality of that?

Yeah, I saw it done last year by a few here, Ive got an inverter I bought this year, its not in the back, its actually up front since I dont have a rear power outlet. I was thinking of running lights out the sunroof to the roof rack. be easy enough to unplug and turn off if police were in the area.
 
I've seen a LR in my daughter's school for 2 weeks now. And I like it on my vehicle just for the holidays...lets be merry! LOL!

As for the legality and road safety concerns, we can enumerate many possibilities to that
1. Those lights are not intended for vehicle applications, it can cause fire.
- But IMO ha! ha! car striken by lightning is more likely to occur! We'll just use lights for outdoor use.
2. It can distract other drivers and cause accidents..
- Ah..lets not make it too distracting or too bright, maybe LED type bulbs, so it has a cool glow. And we make sure vehicle's signal lights and stop lights are not obstructed.

now lets go buy an inverter! :)

It's a good idea, maybe I'll find some 1W leds and solder something beautiful for Yuletide.

The legal side however, I don't know in your side of the world but here in the north Atlantic we can put whatever lights we want (even blue blinking lights) on the car as long as we don't drive around with it.

I used to run Christmas lights on my Big rig when I was driving over the road. The key for legality is they can't be flashing or mostly red and blue. At least in most areas.
 
I'm actually thinking of doing something like that as well, but in a different fashion. I don't know if anyone has heard of led throwies, but I want to just throw them all over my 4runner a day or two before Christmas. they should stay lit for 2-3 days. here's an example of what i'm talking about

I put lights on my rack every year. This year instead of the big LED bulbs I have the old school color flashing patterns that are more fun to look at.

One tip I learned over the years is to zip tie in a zig zag formation instead of wrapping around and around the rack edge bars. It takes forever to wrap it and unwrap it and it's a lot quicker with the zip ties.
