Roof rack controversy. Gobi Vs Whitson

Gobi has lost my future business and I hope others read this as a reference to their lack of ethical practice.

My 2-cents ... this shouldn't become a boycott Gobi thread or anything like it (although I understand why someone would think twice or pause) since if their business goes down it may make them more desperate to continue forward with the lawsuit.

Best case would be for both legal parties to come to an agreement and both businesses to keep operating and the T4R community to move on.

Gobi makes a competitive product hence their success. Keep on innovating and compete!

I'm not necessarily going to boycott Gobi, I just won't be buying from them any time soon. When Josh is able to start producing again, I'll very highly likely buy one of his for two reasons:

1. he's going to need to recoup lost business because of this. As someone who's family has always had a small alignment/frame shop (and now does custom work) competing against bigger companies, it's word of mouth and quality work that gains respect and business.

2. It's just a well made rack and I think it'll make an awesome addition to my build when I'm ready for it. I had already discounted Gobi before this just for the pure and simple fact of how expensive it is.

In the meantime, I'll probably pick up a Rola rack and extension to get me by for fall camping, exploring, and off roading.

Where else can I get a quality rack? I get these homebuilt racks offer similar if not equal quality and craftsmanship, but they have no customer support or really a guarantee of any kind. People buy gobi because what else are we supposed to get? GOBI has me a little ticked off but I'm only hurting myself by turning my back on them.

At the end of the day, I just want my damn rack! :frusty:

Ask some of the people here that have bought something from Gobi before. They don't have any customer support either.

You obviously haven't worked with Josh. He stands behind his work and he is very accessible.

FWIW, the thread is a lot shorter if you block Thai and wadle5.... Oh, and I'm praying for everyone, because apparently that will solve the legal problems.

I weren't planning on participating in this thread, as there are way too many non-sense, mis-information, internet-lawyering, people taking things too far....

But I do want to comment on Gobi Rack's quality and customer support.

I own a Gobi rack, I love the quality, it looks great, and it is SOLID. They are "not that much more" expensive than anyone else ($1500ish), if you consider their pricing INCLUDES "shipping" (which other companies will charge $100? $200 for), the ladder (which is an $200+ item, and that NO ONE out there except them being able to execute/produce one), and an additional accessory (like the sunroof cover or a mount), and almost any "reasonable" light mounts you need (if you talk to them in advance, they will get them to you). All in all, apples to apples.... they are all about the same price..... bajarack long rack is $999 just the rack (shipping extra), frontrunner not even go all the way to the front, but only rear 61" flat rack is $1018, eezi-awn k9 is $1325, ARB cost $1104+$221 fitting kit.... lastly, IMO, I like racks that has a rim much more than a "flat rack" where I find securing cargo more challenging (but that can be just me...)

I do see people complaining about "the wait", and I do agree that Gobi can do better to "keep people" informed, OR just give people more realistic expectation...... to me, I understood very well, that ordering Gobi or Shrockworks is an automatic 12 weeks wait and i am not going to whine about it.... with that said, that may not be for everyone who is not willing to wait....

And for other customer service except "the wait", Gobi is fantastic!! I have an issue with some installation and fitting issue, I got a personal call from Paul, and he walked me thru my problem. And they sent me some light mounts that they could totally have charged me for them (and I have heard of this same experience from more than a few other happy Gobi owners). And Paul even followup with an email sometime post talking to me, to make sure that the issue is truly resolved. Personally, I am HAPPY with their customer service!

** disclaimer: I have no association with any of the above mentioned manufacturers, but I do own a Gobi rack, and I am a happy owner..... I will buy from them again anytime....

Didn't you secure a group buy with them in the past? Not trying to stir the pot, but I'm wondering if your prior contact with them led to better service and communication with them as compared to what others received.
