I have a Gobi rack and want to use a hard case or cases on it. Any suggestions?

i bought on craigslist a thule 17
here it is on my volvo
here it is on my 03 4 runner on the OEM rack
my same box on a 3rd gen with oem rack
same box on my 03 4th gen with [MENTION=77764]Whitson Metalworks[/MENTION] rack
What year? On my '05, a pair of Plano 1919 cases fit really nicely side-by-side in between the crossbars leaving the sunroof open and the rear available for firewood.

No offense but they look like a coffin to me
none taken for me. you will not care what it looks like when you stuff 17 cubic feet of stuff your wife brings along for a 2 day trip (just in case we need it stuff, including the kitchen sink). you will be amazed how much stuff this swallows up. and keeps dry or keeps the dirty out of the truck.
for instance.
in the box i had the following
-10 2'x2' metal signs
-6 6foot poles
-1 5 foot ladder
-3 gallons of paint
-painting accersories
Nothing in the trunk of the car besides my small tool box.

I've been toying around with the idea of getting a roof basket (load warrior). We just had our first kid at the beginning of the year and I've realized I'm going to need some addition storage if we go on trips. Hell, a weekend trip to visit the grandparents already fills up the interior cargo space.
I was initially thinking a basket for things I don't mind being exposed to the elements (coolers, tents, chairs, etc). Seems like I can get a used one for around $150 as well.
Should I start looking at these hard cases as a better option? How much would a used one typically run?

Well I got the rack installed and am still trying to find the "right" box. My wife really doesn't like the looks of the aerodynamic boxes although they make sense to me for gas mileage. Looks like we will get one or more Pelican type cases that will fit between the cross bars. I do have a Gobi tool box on order to carry tow cables, etc. Any more advice will be appreciated.

This is the best picture I could find where I had the boxes mounted up. These are the Plano 1919-00 boxes and they hold a lot of our camping gear. I can still fit two bikes up there with the boxes mounted, and they strap down really easily with the Gobi ratchet straps that they sell as part of their Jerry can mounting kit.

Do you have any leakage problems with the Plano boxes?
Not that I've noted yet, but it hasn't rained in SoCal in a really long time. I have some silicone that I'm going to use to run a bead in the lid groove to seal it. Plano also sells the same boxes with o-ring seals in them to make them airtight I believe.

These boxes are really sturdy. I can jump up and down on the lid with just a small amount of flex in the trunk sidewall.

A buddy of mine has the same Gobi rack and uses some aluminum boxes from a military surplus store. They work well and fit nicely.
