roof rack question, shame on me...

Here's the backstory: I've always loved the 3rd gen 4Runners, and I found the perfect one for me last month. It's a 2000 SR5 Highlander w/ 5spd. The best part is it only has 66k! Needless to say it's in outstanding shape except for the peeling paint on the roof rack and trailer hitch. I decided to have these parts powder coated in semi-gloss black.

I violated one of my cardnial rules - I didn't take notes or pictures when taking it apart (shame on me). The powder coating took 2 weeks, and in that time I managed to forget a small detail.

Question: On the leading edge and trailing edge of the roof there is a plastic clip and I've forgotten what to do with it (see picture below). The side rail is secured with 5 torx bolts on each side, but I don't know what to do with the plastic clip. Please advise, as I don't want water ingress and ruin the headliner. Thanks in advance!

I have to drill my own holes if I want a roof rack. so I dont know what the bottom of a stock rack looks like.

guessing here, is that plastic clip an actual clip that the rack would go into?

if so I would think you would get a new rubber washer or what ever that black thing is.

if not you could goop the crap out of it with some silicon so keep it from leaking.

i plan on using some Rivnuts and lost of sealant when I decide to drill my roof.

lay your main tracks down and insert the end caps into the end of them. the small tab that sticks out with the hole in it is for the end screws, once they are all together(make sure you have all the clips and square nuts inside the rails first for the cross bars) lay id down on top of the roof, line it up with the holes and put your torx screws back

"The Kid" is right. You have to lay the main tracks down first, then you squeeze the end pieces in. For me, they were always difficult to put in.

The tab with the hole goes on top of the rail it slides into.

Remember to add a dab of silicone sealant to all the holes before you put the bolts in to seal from water.

Thank you, the reassembly sequence is helpful and I'll definitely use the silicone sealant. The plastic hole (on left side in pic) definitely appears to go under the plastic end cap when I line things up. I just don't see anything under the plastic end caps that go in the hole. Did I misplace a part that goes in this hole, or is it supposed to be left alone?

mine dont have anything that goes into those holes, i think they are just blanks

agreed.

i took my end caps off of the rear today and the holes with anchor-thingy that you posted were there.

they are not used.

just reinsert the cap to cover the hole and secure with the torn screw.

Are you sure you have to drill holes? My 4runner didn't come with a roof rack but the holes were already up there.

I got NO plastic strips if that is where you where heading.

Yes I have to drill holes if I want tracks for a rack. dont like it, but oh well. I want a roof rack
