Roof rack question

I'm taking my 4 runner to go snowboarding and would like to rack 3 snowboards on the roof rack that comes with the car. It has 2 sliding bars. Do I just use tie downs? Or is there a special way to use this?

I would suggest you go to www.yakima.com. The have products to carry all sorts of things on your rack. This will cost more than tie downs, but will be much safer.

I'm leaving tonight so I wont have time to buy those for this trip, however I will keep this in mind for my january trip.

I was hoping I could just go to walmart and buy some tiedowns.

My snowboards have served me well for 6 years. Not that much

Not that I am recommending this, but try putting the bindings down and you "should" be okay. If the tip and the tail of the board is pointing down, then the airflow will keep them pressed against the crossbar. Just like an airplane wing. If the tip is up, then the air will get under the board and lift it up. The air will push down on the tail helping the nose go up even more. Also, the bindings will keep them from sliding to far foward or backward.

i've been skiing and riding for years. the best investment is a roof top box. it will keep your stuff safe, dry and out of sight and serves as extra cargo space when needed. plus, it will make less noise than a ski/board rack

Without a proper roof rack and ski attachment, placing the snowboards with the topsheet down facing the roof, you're more than likely going to need to remove the bindings. I know many with the roof rack attachments that try to carry two boards (base to base) per set of attachments have ended up with dented and scratched roofs.

I would suggest a roof bin as well, as it gives you the most versatility even when you're not snowboarding. I've read from members who had both a rack attachment and bin. The rack robs one to two miles more per gallon over the bin (two to three miles per gallon compared to without). The bin takes about a mile per gallon.

Are these alpine boards or you're taking four others with you? I've taken three others and four snowboards inside. The rear center isn't the most comfy position, but they'll be ok.
