Roof rack shovel mount: Quick and easy

This setup cost me $26 by catching the Yakima parts on
Ebay for $16 and the Quick Fist mounts at West Marine at $10/pair.

What it contains (I substituted button-head screws and stainless washers)

How they mount to the crossbars

Finished with a shovel locked down

This is a really great idea! Nice work, Teotwaki. I think I will do this, as well as possibly a hi lift mount. Do you think you need a third crossmember for the hi lift, due to the added weight???

I've been looking for a cheap crossmember. Any sources? I would need it not only for Hi Lift's weight but also because I have to place my existing two close together for the short handled shovel I have.

If you look at the picture of the Quick Fist package you'll see a Hi Lift there.

No idea about where you can get a cheap crossmember. I wonder what the dealer charges? There have been a few members on this site who have removed their roof racks, maybe they want to sell them.

I'd bet that item #1 is both crossmembers and the two side rails for $287.

Ah, well, actually I don't think so. If you look at the guide above the illustration you will see that #1 corresponds to just the cross bar. Maybe it includes both, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the whole set up. I will look into it though.

Here is how I jumped to the conclusion

No separate number for the main rails and only one is shown.

Every other type of bolt, cap and bracket has a number and the highest number is 7. ("No more, no less" in a Holy Hand Grenade Python-esque voice)

If a dealer was open we could just call the parts department and pester them!

I may try to swing by a dealer tomorrow and ask. You've got my interest peaked. I was going to get a roof rack but I'm concerned about being too top heavy, especially after seeing that video of the Xterra roll over. With a shovel and hi lift on the roof WITHOUT a rack, it may be a good compromise. Also, I don't think I'd fit into my garage with a rack

If you search for some of my posts (Canyonlands White Rim Trail) I had a pretty full basket up on top and never felt as if I had to worry about tipping over. I tried to watch out for the total weight since the factory max is supposedly around 150 pounds.

I have a nice Sho-Me unit, 100 watts with PA function. I've got the speaker mounted but the darned control box is too big and funky so I've been exploring ways to mount it somewhere hidden and remote the controls. Speaker is in the front left area in front of the radiator

I just put about 100 hard off-road miles (lots of bumps and rocks) on my truck with a hi-lift on the stock roof rack. The jack was centered (side to side) and the foot of the jack rested on one cross member. No problems.

I checked with the local dealer about getting just one crossbar for the roofrack, nothing else. I was told they only sell them in pairs, WITH the plastic covers that go in front and in back of the side rails. Seems like a strange package deal. They want $400. Yeesh.
