Roof rack ?

Here is an odd one.

I'd like to add a roof rack to my 2017 but I also need to have space for additional bike racks. I carry a lot of bikes but when the bike load is low I put much of the gear on the roof.

Any suggestions? Searches have yielded little.

I don't really know what you're asking, but if you want to know if there is an aftermarket bike rack that will secure bikes to the factory roof rack, the answer is yes. Have a look at Yakima HighSpeed or ForkLift for example. You can use the Mighty amount (for example) to connect these bike trays to the factory roof rack crossbars. You could probably fit 3 or 4 bikes on the factory rack. If you need more, buy some Yakima crossbars that will extend beyond the factory roof rails (like 72" crossbars, for example).

We're all glad to help but we do need some more info on what exactly you're wanting. How many bikes, front tires on or off, is a hitch rack an option, what other gear you're looking to carry, etc. Perhaps some hypotheticals of the extremes you'd be wanting (max bikes/gear scenarios).

Thanks all.

What I am after is a roof rack that will let you carry various cargo and also attach a bike rack(Thule/Yakima) that will mount a road bike. Typically I choose not to remove the front wheel. From what nglayton and cymon stated it looks like this isnt that big of a deal.

You just answered your own question!! Get a Yak or a Thule rack with a cargo basket or box, long bars and a couple of bike racks.

Or if you want a permanent, full-length rack you could get a Gobi or similar with crossbars to mount Yak/Thule/Whatever bike racks.

Alternatively I like a hitch-mount bike rack. I'm short so it's difficult for me to get bikes onto the top of my 4Runner (it's going to be tough for anyone with a lifted Runner). I have this one:

Swagman XTC4 Platform Hitch Mount Rack; Compact, Easy Storage

But I've been seeing these around a lot and they look really good if you want to carry a lot of bikes:

Roof rack for bikes and gear

Look at the Baja Racks flat Utility rack with cross bars at about 4" on center. Not the mesh type floor. This one is great for loading gear and would probably work for bikes with a bit of bungee chords, rope and ratchet straps over the top bars. There's probably 5 ways to secure the tires down to the cross bars and with a tie over the top they'd be secure. I have this rack and really like it for tying gear down. Mine is full length without the sunroof cut-out since I don't have a sunroof.
For bikes I have a simple Yakima trailer hitch rack I've had for about 15 years that slides into the hitch receiver. It holds up to 4 bikes easily so I've never needed to tie my bikes on top.
The problem with the factory Toyota roof rack is there's nothing to protect the roof from gear. As gear shifts on rough roads it scratches the top.

I have a 4 bike thuke already but we often carry 5 bike, plus gear to races so the roof rack+bike rack was something I was looking for.

Nice racks. Looks like it may do the job as long as you can use those bars to add an additional rack. I didn't realize how expensive they would be.

I see two options. A full-length roof rack will allow you to have room for both bikes and gear but they're gonna be more expensive. A less expensive option is a basket like a Yakima megawarrior that mountsnto your factory crossbars. It can carry gear or bikes, not so much both. You could run a basket and a hitch rack, but cost is creeping up there. Craigslist often has used Yakima and Thule products though so you could find yourself a deal.

If you look at their websites you can see the various mounting options. Here's a list I put together a while back, I'll see if I have time to go through it this weekend to update. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/238923-consolidated-5th-gen-roof-rack-guide.html.
