Roof Racks?

With all the room inside the 4Runner why the big interest in roof rack?

A lot of off-roaders put their spare up there (as I have mine). Helps your departure angles, and larger tires won't fit underneath anymore. I also have extra lights mounted on my rack and use the extra space (what little is left after my tire) often.

Also, granted mine is a 3rd gen, but with me and my kids and our gear, there's not a lot of extra space on long road trips, but we camp and off-road a lot. I also have a big drawer in my "bed" area taking up space, too, not to mention the toolbox I always have.

You can never have enough space, imo!

If I could keep all the gear on the inside I would. With big camping trips in the back country with two kids and two dogs eats up space pretty quick. So for me it is a nessary to have things on the roof, plus I don't want to keep shovels and fuel inside the truck.

105 pound dog takes up the back. Rear seat area is all that's left. That where the cooler and dry food goes.

Everything awkward goes on the roof. Chairs, tent, awning, dry bag w/sleeping bags.

:bigok: I have a lot of Gear! On the rack: Hiking Packs, Sleeping bags, Sleeping pads, Blankets, Pillows, Boots, tarps & Wood.

Ive only had mine for one trip so far, but it frees up A LOT of room inside. We were traveling with 3 adults and 2 dogs. Without some of our stuff up top, everything would not have fit. Plus if its just us and the dog, he gets the cargo area.

I know you can put luggage bags/boxes up there without a rack, but I dont feel that its as secure. That and not everything that ends up on top goes in the bag.

So I guess mine is mainly for looks and road trips. I wont put lights up there, but may end up with a spare up there eventually.
