Roof tire mounting-hazardous?

Its a possibility or I also like the opportunity of running two spares if we do a really long trip.

I have been wheeling and gone through two tires in a weekend (thankfully not in my truck)

Yeah that would suck. But with your schedule, no trips of that caliber are in the near future.

Are there any 275's you like? I just wish Nitto or BFG made 275's...... It would make this all a lot easier.

Hard to say, I don't know the 275's too well. Cooper would be an idea, that blue limited that was linked in the tire thread looked really good with those tires in my opinion.

As for the trip, yeah it will be hard but we will make up for it when I am done with my season. I am excited for winter break, I say we plan sometime BIG. I have 6 weeks off :D :D :D

As do I. I say 5 weeks, with a few days of rest before and after. :bigok:

Haha, kidding. At least a full week would be fun though.

Those coopers were 18" though I believe. Not sure if they have a 17" set. I'll have to look into it. I just feel loyal to my Nitto's, as they have performed great. The only thing that could compromise that, would be the BFG's, but I am unsure at this point.

I would say you have time, but that is not so much your style. My basic understanding for 275's though is it is a somewhat unusually sized tire and since there is low demand, there is minimal selection.

Also, if you are going going to 275 from 265 you should start asking yourself if it is worth the upgrade for a minimal tire difference. Especially if you are leaving the brand we are pretty loyal to.

Yeah, that's why I am looking for ways to get a 285 spare without cutting into, or completely removing my back bumper. I'll look into the 3rd cross beam idea.

What would you pick? BFG's or a LT rated Nitto? One other problem. How do you get the tire on the roof? :D

Do you have confidence in airing down a LT-Nitto?? Ask that question first and that will answer your question. (I do not...but that's just me.)

Plan for the future...see my next post. You bought a P-rated Nitto and that was apparently a mistake...don't make the same mistake twice. :D (No offense intended.) If you plan on airing down, then i would stick with tires that are designed to be aired down (BFG or Goodyear among the popular brands).

Getting a big arse tire up and down is a problem...esp. doing it without damaging your 4runner!

Sorry, Josh. However, you stated before that you got this lift because you plan on putting bumpers in the future...and that you're getting into off-roading, right?? Off-roading will damage your stock bumpers sooner or later.

So, why do you go through the trouble of making a 3rd member or making this & that to get the heavy spare up on your roof when you could just get a rear bumper to "kill two birds with one stone"??? Yeah, so, you plan on going through with this hassle...only to ditch it in the future when you get an off-road bumper??

What is so unfriendly about an off-road bumper on the streets??

I understand that you have not found the one that you like yet...but i would spend more time in researching THAT option because.......you will get it anyway in the future. In other words, why wait on something that will be inevitable?? You have the finanial means right now...so why not? Don't bother with the roof mount...it is PIA and may make your 4runner too tall for street driving anyway!

Geez, i sound like a salesman...but i hope that you get what i am trying to say without being offended. Dude, like i said all along, you need to prioritize your mods in importance to what you want your rig to be. Plan for the future so that you don't have to pay twice for the same effect.

My opinion/advice.

When you go wheelin' do you use your trailer hitch?

Maybe there's some cool tire carrier that'd swing away carrier that'd slip into your hitch reciever. Then when DD'ing around town just leave it in the garage. Just a thought...

I understand where you are coming from, however I really do not like the appearance of a rear bumper. I like them only because of the tire carrier option. I do not worry much as far as departure angles. My tow hitch takes the hits. And most guys will only run front bumpers. Those who run rear bumpers are mostly in the same boat as me.-tire mounting.
 
It's alright, but that's a lot of money for something that ugly. I want something that doesn't stick out over a foot. That would also be murder on my departure angles.

Yeah your hitch definitely takes a beating and you are right, that would not fare so well.
