i posted this in what i think was a new users forum, and someone there suggested i repost it here as it would get more answers:
I'm new here, and from what I've read on this site before this seems like a pretty good community. i have searched the forums for 4wd help but it seems like most threads I find are about when is it ok to switch to 4wd, how to operate low 4, etc. my questions are much more basic than that. i just bought a 1997 4runner limited yesterday and here are a few questions i have. thanks in advance.
extra note --> a user manual did not come with vehicle. everything else is great though i promise 8)
1) when would i ever want to use the neutral setting on the 4wd shifter? also, if I'm in neutral on the 4wd shifter, why does it not want me to go back to H or L (sitting stationary, but loud clicking if i tried to switch back)?
2) what is 'A/T P' on the display? i see it usually switching from high to low (or back again) but i don't understand its importance.
3) i understand pushing the 4wd button on the shifter moves it from H2 to H4, does it do anything when in L4?
4) I also understand what the ECT button is, but don't understand how electronically controlled transmission is somehow better than a "regularly" controlled trans. does it help or hurt mileage? haven't been able to tell so far.
i apologize if that's just too many questions im just trying to understand asap. thanks again for indulging my lack of knowledge, but im loving the 4runner and can't wait to learn more.
