I was showing my buddy some features of my 4R today. Cargo area and such and the double decker carge area ect.... he thought it was pretty clever, I have mixed emotion's about it. Showed him how the seat's fold down ect... and he say's how are you going to fit all your drum's in there.......hmmmmmm, now it's got me thinking this might be a problem, nothing I can do about it now, but do you all feel the room in the back is ample or does it look smaller than it actually is.....I'm layed up right now so I won't be able to see if it work's until next time I transport my set. 7 drum's , stand's, 7 cymbals,Gibralter rack, cymbal stand's, ect... I think it will be like fitting a jig saw puzzle...lol

If I am not mistaken, I think the 4th gen 4Runner has 77 cu ft. of space with the second row folded. Probably only average or even slightly low for it's class. Blame the low roof line and live rear axle in this area.
When I was shopping I was really impressed with the Honda Pilot's 90 cu ft. Its about 4" wider than the Runner. The space between the wheelwells is also 48-49" while my Runner is 41.5".
Can't speak for the drums. although I used to do some jazz drumming in my younger days and managed to filt my entire set in a 1969 Chevy Impala sedan (trunk and entire back seat)!. I assume you have more pieces than I did back then. It may be a tight fit for you, but try several combinations until you arrive at the best configuration. There is always the roof rack!
I am happy that my wife and I can sleep in the back during impromptu camping trips (without the kids!). Although we are short at 5'4" and 5'7", I am not a small man (former bodybuilder) and we manage to sleep comfortably and can even sit-up and read while in the back.
